550 rebuild time! HOP UP TIPS WANTED
« on: October 21, 2008, 07:56:36 AM »
Its that time in good ol' Michigan! Winter is quickly approaching and I'm gonna start my taredown/rebuild. Anyone have any good tips on hopping up the motor and/or suspension? Tips, tricks or otherwise? I don't plan on taking the bottom end apart, it only has 11 thou on it & sound good. I was looking at maybe a hotter cam and changing the sprockets out for a little more light to light acceleration. I don't do any highway on this bike, I have pods and a 4 into 1 on it already. I saw something on here about a 650 cam in a 550? Is that a good one? Also 750 carbs? Are they good for a few more HPs? I am going down to the frame & freshening everthing up.
If you're worried about how many calories are in beer, is losing weight really your biggest problem?

I disassembled my 550 a few years ago. I did well for a while and got side tracked. I have recently moved my stuff to a new shop maybe l'll get it together by spring.

I have a solid 650 parts bike, I was thinking about the cam swap myself but I will probably stay out of the motor for now. I would like to go solid state ignition and I have built a custom exhaust

Good luck on your quest for HP

There are several threads on the topic already.
Try searching using various phrases like "650 cam", " what can be done 550", etc etc.
Jonesy did a real good piece on porting a 550 head. Try to find that one too.
I can't remember all the topics but there here somewere.
You can also find valuable ideas in the projects section of the board.
If you're thinking about it....it's probably been done.

My engine is going to get fresh 59mm (555cc) pistons and rings, a 650 cam and head work.
Might also fit KZ650 Mukuni carbs as well, but that is a big job as I would have to make manifolds.

Good luck

Two recipes for better acceleration.

a)Weight loss.  Sometimes it's not easy to remove pounds and still keep it streetable, but it will seem like you've already increased torque without touching the engine. You already have a 4-1, which may or may not help power output but should weigh less than original.

b)Power increase. You've already got good info on where to search here for advice. An increase in compression, even some mild porting with a cam and better valve springs gives a nice bump and won't affect reliability.

Regarding suspension and handling mods, these bikes are quite good anyway, but....

tapered roller bearings in the steering head,
replace wheel bearings,
redo swingarm bushings with brass and replace the original collar. (check with Hondaman here)
disassemble and clean forks. Replace old springs with progressive fork springs and or look at installing emulators.
make sure your wheels are straight & true and spokes tight
good shocks, there are still lots of good ones available for these bikes.

It's that time for me as well - I'm currently chasing a 650 cam, tach, and cable on fee bay.
New Marshall 4-1 is in a box in the garage (for the money, that thing better sound GREAT!)
That will be all for this winter - next I'd like to finally sort out pods and relocating electrics (looking at Benjis kit).
But the cam, exhaust, and a Reick stage 1 port job should pin my ears back a bit.  :)
