another thing people forget to do is rough up the surface.  This applies to both epoxy and soldier.

After checking out the fuel joint, I think it's ok.  Made a little bit of progress.  Not much though.  I'm kind of stuck on a decision to rebuild the 650 carbs or replace them with some earlier 750 carbs.

Here's where I'm at.  Me being a noob says, what's this plug on the end of the tube do???


Then I found out.


Stole a wheel from another bike I have.  I now have a 17" rear instead of 16".  Subtle difference, but I like the larger wheel.


After striping off some parts.  I started labeling all the wires.  Hopefully that will help when I make a new harness.


I also fiddled around with the 350 in the background and got it to fire up tonight.

If you can do it properly I think solder would be the way to go, but I think JB weld is a lot more rugged than people give it credit for. The key in either case is going to be prep work, getting all contaminates out of the area.

I fixed my power steering reservoir in my VW almost three years ago and it hasn't leaked a drop since (knock on wood).  That stuff is great.  I also used it on a brake piston on my CM450 that I just sold.  It looked like it had some sort of factory flaw in it.  It was like a pit, but it wasn't from rust.  JBWelded it and then sanded it smooth and the brakes didn't leak.  Good news is, it doesn't look like the fuel joint is cracked.  Once I get some new o-rings I'll test it to make sure before putting the carbs back together.

No real progress to speak of.  I got another set of carbs for cheap on ebay.  After dis assembly, the ones I had were in pretty rough shape.  The overflow tubes and bowls had all kinds of epoxy on them where it looked like they were trying to fix leaks.  Was torn between trying out the 750 carbs instead, but I got a nice deal on a set from a 650.  I should have some time this winter to get working on it.  Without a bike to ride (since I sold the two that ran) I definitely need to get cracking on this.  It will be spring again before I know it.

Sorry to report, no.  I haven't forgotten about it though.  My motivation just hasn't been geared towards it lately.  I have my second child due in a couple of months so I've been doing a lot of home remodel/repair.  I will post updates when I get started on it again.

I know how it goes...no new kid on the way, or anything, but my project is also crawling right now.  (Car repairs, new furnace, Christmas, etc took their toll.)  Get to it when you can - these bikes are 30+ years old.  They'll still be there when you get back.
