Year/Make and Model of this fule tank???
« on: October 25, 2008, 11:41:28 AM »
Can anyone identify this tank by the year and model.  It is advertised as a 78 cb550 which I know (or at least I'm pretty sure) is not correct?  Any idea if it will fit a 77 cb550K?

Thanks

It looks an awfull lot like the one on my '73 CB500.

No idea if it will fit on a '77 550.

I think it is 72 500.. in 73 750,s went to wide stripe, not sure when the little brother changed his shirt!!

This is the Exact tank I want to try to mount on a CB750.. think it will look so much cleaner and lighter, show off the motor more.. lot of work to the underneath though.. less with my carbs than stockers though..

Well, thanks for the replys.  I ended up winning this thing on e-bay for $27.00 +$15.00 shipping!!!  I thought I would through a low bid out there just to see what happens.  I thought it would go for $60-$80?

Anyway, I know it is not a 78 550 because I have a 77 and the 78 tanks are the same as mine.  They have the flush latch with the hidden filler cap.  I think I'm going more the bobber route with this buiild and think the crome filler latch will look better.

I'll let you know if it fits.  If not, I may have a tank to get rid of here shortly.

71-73 cb500 four in Candy Garnet Brown, If postage went so high now to UK I would have bid on it! Petcock is same as 750 69-75 as are tank emblems

Thanks Bryan,

I'll be working on the petcock this weekend.  Just want to give it a good once over.  The tank is really clean inside and out with only one small dent.  I don't anticipate needing to do more than just clean and reassemble.

I really like the look of the exposed chrome filler instead of the "trap door" style of my original 77 tank.  Although if gas prices go back up I may want to use the original tank because it locks...

LOOKS LIKE THE TANK FROM MY 72 CB500K, BUT THAT COLOR IS FROM A DIFFERENT YEAR.

In the US, that style of gas tank and petcock was used On the CB500/550 through the 1974 model year.
The one you have, looks to have been repainted.

Different questions regarding this tank....

What is the best way to fix the dent?  Bondo, sand, prime, etc.?  If I wanted to add knee dents, do you think I could fill the high side of the dent with bondo and get good results?  The filler would be north of the white stripes while the knee dent would begin at the stripe.  Am I making any sense here?
