Tight Leather Gloves?
« on: November 06, 2008, 07:49:40 AM »
Hi, I a pair of new leather gloves that almost fit great. One finger on one of the gloves is a little tighter and hurts when I bend it. There is a seam on the side of the finger. Anyway, can i stretch it to fit? I hate to return it, cause I fear the next size would be a littler to big.  It's very painful to close my hand.

Sounds like you need 1 size larger.

Had the same problem with a new pair of Held gloves.  For the tight finger I soaked the finger area with water and then jammed a broom stick into the finger and let it dry.  The process gave my fat fingers just enough room.

I used to make custom holsters so I did a lot of leather forming. You would be best to dampen the leather and not soak it. Using a paper towel dampen the hide until you can feel some moitsure inside. If your finger is as wide as a broom handle use a handle, if not find something smooth and sligltly widers. As sugggested leave the form in place until dry. You can move the process along by using a hairdryer on very low heat. You do not want to dry the oils that make the hide supple as it will become stiff and crack.

If you're needing to stretch leather and not just form it, then you need to dampen it with alcohol.  It will let the fibers in the leather stretch and stay at the size you want (within reason).  Garment grade or boot grade leather will just return to its normal shape after it dries when wetted with water.

Also be sure to treat it with something like Skidmores Leather Cream.  The alcohol will knock any of the oil in the leather out and the cream will keep the gloves from cracking.  You should be able to find Skidmores at most tack shops (saddle shops) You can treat your leather jackets with it, saddles, chaps, boots...basically any leather with a smooth finish but keep in mind that it will darken stuff up for a while.  ABSOLUTELY don't use it on suede (or elk ::) ) Take it from a (former) saddle shop guy, its good #$%* ;)

I soak gloves (fill them with warm/hot water)
Apply leather dressing to outside and wear them. As threy dry out he dressing gets absorbed. Its ime consuming but does work well. Lot cheaper than handmade custom gloves

In the air force our issued boots were always uncomfortable when we got them, we used to give them a good thick coat of nugget and them fill them with water as hot as we could stand, let them soak for 5 minutes and put your feet in them. Wear them until they dry out, they will have stretched, shaped and formed themselves to a perfect fit. This could be the way to form your gloves for your hands.
