Near Miss
« on: November 06, 2008, 02:47:36 PM »
I took a day off work to take advantage of the fine weather we have been having here. I set off for a pleasant season ending ride through the fall countryside. I generally go out towards Stockbridge, but I hadn't yet been to Jackson this year so I found myself on Seymour road beyond Waterloo. There were a few cars parked at the various turnouts in the state rec area, presumably bow hunters.
I was lucky, I saw the deer coming from behind the trees about 30 feet off the road. I slowed from 45 when I first saw it, but it was clear that we were on a collision course. Sometimes I ride one handed or put my feet back on the rear pegs for a little stretch. I was at full attention at this particular moment and grabbed and stomped every bit of brake that I had as the distance between us closed. This deer was determined and I thought it might run into the side of me as I came to a roll but as I flinched he veered and cleared in front of me, inside of 10 feet, waaaaay too close.
I've never hit one, never been this close, dog cat skunk coon, lifetime, car or bike. It would have been a helluva bad way to end the season, but the brakes were good, and I saw it early enough to react.

Kevin,

Glad to hear you missed it. It was a beautiful day. I was out that way, we may have almost passed on another. ;) Went out Scio Church and wound my way to Sharon Mills, north on M-52 a ways then back south and headed east on North Territorial ending up coming back into Ann Arbor via HRD. Sadly, the weather forecast is not looking too good from here on. :'(

early this year i had a deer jump right in front of me
if i were driving a car i would of wasted it
he left me just enough room to get aroung behind it
don't know what made me do it but i couldn't resist
i took my hand off the left grip and slapped that deer on the rear end as i was going behind
it took off like a banshee
i figure it was payback for one i hit last year

The deer has a questionable future as firearms season opens November 15th.

Afterwards I had to stop and collect myself for a couple of minutes before going on. Change of clothes not required. ;D

A memorable ending for your adventure. I was wishing I had a helmet cam.

A very nice spot and one of the reasons I went that way. Austin road and Pleasant Lake are both nice. I gotta find a different way through Chelsea though. South Main was way to busy.

Glad to hear you didn't get hurt! I was also out getting another ride snuck in before the end of the season.

Speaking of deer, just had a call from my daughter. It seems a deer decided to go to my grandson's daycare yesterday, uninvited. The eldest was off at kindergarten for the morning in another building and my son-in-law had just dropped the youngest off.

I had my own near miss yesterday....riding down a straight 4 lane highway (2 lanes in each direction) and I was in the right hand lane doing around 50 mph on my cafe CB750K2 with 3 other cars on my left hand side. An old man (white hair, looked very old), shot out from the opposite side of the road turning left into my lane...I couldnt believe it...I slammed on the brakes but I was going to fast...I saw the side of the Volvo approach very fast and I thought how I was going to hit it and how I would go down and wondered how I would crash as my front wheel was heading straight for the door......there was no room for avoidance as I had a high kerb on the right hand side and traffic on the left.....thankfully through a combination if old Volvo driver still accelerating with foot flat on gas, arms outstretched, head snapped back and my stainless steel brake lines on the front I narrowly (and I mean an inch or two) missed slamming into his rear bumper...I could see my front tire and his bumper almost touching....had he pulled out and gone slow I would have hit him side on......

I rode past his side window, shaking my fist, and could see him...staring blankly ahead (or perhaps in fear), arms outstretched, head snapped back as though going at 100 mph (though only doing 40 by now...tops!)....I was shaken but continued on thinking how lucky I had been to escape going down..danger really does come at you from all sides....its been a while since Ive had such a near miss....scary!

Andy,
Good moves to miss the old guy. It seems like senior driving tests are a coming thing, looks like they are already in place in California:

its been a while since Ive had such a near miss....scary!

My deer miss was my first "close one" since dusting off my CB in 2002. A couple were from my own overdriving thru twisties. I had one like yours when a stoner turned in front of me while I was treating myself to a birthday ride about 30 years ago. I don't forget any of them.
