What a stud!!

I haven't seen many of these 500/550 studs lately but got lucky and ended up in the right place at the right time.

HD studs for these engines are maybe not as critical as with a 750, but it can't hurt.

Nice find! How about scanning that info sheet and we can get someone to load it into the site.
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

nice find, brent. i keep meaning to compare the length of the 550 studs to that of the 650 bolts... theoretically they should work. they are the same diameter as the HD cb750 studs, and torque to 22 ft#.

These are brought to you by the good folks at Kibblewhite. Something is amiss with my scanner (or the operator) but it's just installation info. Recommended torque is 20-22 ft. pds also.

I'm quite sure they did Mike, the info sheet is like rare parchment! It's been a dogs age since I've seen these things.

i feel like i should keep this one secret, but i just checked and i'm 99% positive the 650 bolts will work instead of the 550 studs. i'd want to actually bolt one up to say for sure, but they are pretty much the same length taking into account that the head of the bolt compensates for a little bit of thread portion at the top of the 550 stud. 650 bolts: as stout as the APE HD CB750 studs, and torque the same. downside: studs make installing the jugs easier, as they hold the cylinders upright.

can't answer that from an engineering perspective, but from a practical perspective i can tell you that both have clear advantages and faults. studs: can be difficult to remove if necessary, but provide good alignment of cylinders upon assembly. also, you have to torque the bolts into the case as well as the nuts to the studs. seems like more room for error and stretch to me, but i'm no expert. bolts: easier to replace, and less thread to bugger up.

there must be a reason they used studs to begin with though? the threads are actually larger than the diameter of the stud, unlike the HD studs and 650 bolts.

bolt = more working room inside the frame for head removal etc.

stud = ease of installation of cyls and head for reasons already stated

bolt = little nasties get in the holes and gum up the thread

stud = no holes for little nasties (unless replacing studs)




i've worked on both and i believe the studs to be FAR superior.  not really in strength, perse, just all around ease of doing the job.

I agree the biggest drawback with a bolt is the potential to damage the upper case thread.

For that reason alone the stud gets my nod.  ;) (How's that Sam?)

that's cold hef, might be true, but that's still cold. i love my 650 better head design, no points to mess with, guess papa honda saved the best (sohc4) for last
1980 cb650c first bike i owned now the wife's ride.           1982 xv920j virago, bike i learned to ride on rescued it from a 13 year coma (sitting in the shed) now she runs beautifully and rides like a dream.
