Author Topic: Cool Blue Pipes! (Read 3513 times)

Bike seems to be running perfect (78 750cb K) but all the pipes have blued very rapidly now since it is running. Probably a total of 45/60min of running time. I am running velocity stacks and Paucho bell tip exhaust which are pretty much straight through. The headers are Mac drag pipes and I guess the question is, Are the chrome on the Macs Junk! or are we a little lean or both. The color does not bother me, have had other bikes with discolored pipes. I just want to make sure the is no other concern if in fact it is lean.

Might be a little lean.
But, stock headers are double walled, so dont discolor. The drag pipes are not.

additonally, the chrome on mac pipes is junk.

The plugs look good, very nice beige! I think the mac pipes chrome is junk also!

I have not been able to get it on the road cause of the 20/30 degree temps we have been getting, not the greatest for cruising. Most of the running has been at idle and maybe that is a part of the issue with no air flowing past the pipes/engine. I did not hear any excessive snap, crackle, or POP but you could hear the heat of the pipes (maybe a stale box of crispies)

The 1988 HawkGT came out with single wall pipes for the express purpose of "blueing" as it was thought the look was nostalgic to the late 60s british bikes.

This stuff will remove most of it when it gets really bad, leaving behind an "antiques roadshow patina".

I have been trying to post pictures of both the pipes and the bike since it was just finished but, it seems I am unable to load properly not sure if its the browser or what. Any suggestions? And don't get me wrong I LIKE THE PIPES! Just did not want any issues.

Hey Gene,

I love the black engine guards. Were those chrome guards originally? If they were chrome, how did you prep the surface? Great looking bike!!

They were chrome and most of it was peeling. Just Used a D/A to rough up then paint. I figured even if the only last a couple seasons they come off easy to paint.

Great photos and very unique looking bike - very nice! More details on the exhaust please....and I agree about the black engine guards -nice touch.

One question though - the carb rack looks as though its bent down or no vertical -is that correct and is there a reason for it? Like tank clearance?

you are right, the carbs were just hanging there I pushed them on real quick cause it was a nice day for pictures. Also you can see the Left side cover is loose cause the paint was still curing and I did not want to push on too tight. They have been properly secured now. The pipes are Mac drag pipes which I had to enlarge the hole that connects the two pipes together at the underside mount so I could have enough clearance to spread them a little to install the muffler flanges. At the time I could not find Paucho up swept pipes (which are available now) so I used an old set of Triumph pipes and cut a short piece of the bend to kick the pipe up and installed between the header and muffler. The drag pipes were shortened to two different lengths to move the mufflers back/forward to be able to see the 2 separate mufflers on each side so they were not exactly next to each other. Way to much time and money in the exhaust!

Thanks Gene great info and I really like the upswept look of the pipes so money well spent!

I also like the white - although Id personally add a tank stripe to break it up or even some pinstriping. Sharp looking bike and clearly a lot of work gone into it.

Foot pegs are from Jirehcycle.com a harley/shovelhead supplier I have use for years on earlier shovelhead/ironhead projects. I had to install a bushing next to the peg mount where the pin slides in which a bushing can be made or I just used a stainless nut to take up the space. Geno
