Front suspension
« on: December 03, 2008, 11:33:02 AM »
Hey guys, My name is Bob. i need some help with this question... i have a cb 650 custom from 82. What i need to know is whether or not front forks along with triple trees from say a cb 550 or 350 would be compatible with the neck of my 650 frame. If not where can i find necks? I plan on building a rigid frame so i need to find a neck or maybe chop it off another bike. Anyone have some answers for me.

Do you want to just add a hard tail rear section or make a whole new frame? Whats wrong with your current 650 forks? Do you want to build the neck height to match the fork length or buy forks that fit your neck height? Planning on raking the front end or leaving it close to stock. Got a lathe? Lathe and a section of tubing and you have a new neck. Still going to have the issue of VIN numbers, you could always transfer the numbers off your 650 neck although its not quite legal.

Sounds like you need to do some more homework first, or we need more info.

Want to do it, or do it right...

i have recently found someone to build a frame for me. The forks on my 650 are to long... im trying to keep everything low on this bike. I plan on keeping the rake around 38 or 40 degrees so what i was asking is whether the axle which slides through the necks is universal among honda cbs. I.e if i were to take the front end of a cb550 would it fit the neck of a 650? If this is possible then i can do as you have suggested with ading on a hard tail which would also solve the vin # problem.

Just my 2 cents but ya might wanna pick ProTeal55's brain for info. I'm sure there are others too but he comes to mind. Hunt for him in member's listing and check his posts. He's building a hard tail now. Guy does seriously nice work.

I would suggest just keeping your 650 triple tree so you don't need to worry about the triple tree stem length, getting bearings that will work, etc..

From what I have seen both the 500/550 series and the 650's have a 35mm fork tube diameter. Just put some different forks in your existing triple tree. There are a long list of possibilities here:

jreich is right.

Just keep the tripple trees you have, and the fork lowers, and you can have stanchion tubes made to whatever length you want. Easiest, best solution.
No.
