Hey there!
My names Don aka Lights Out, 31 years old from Vancouver Canada. I've been lurking for a while, signed up to use the search function and now am introducing myself cuz I figure i'm gonna have some questions that I can't answer from the FAQ or search.
I recently purchased a 1976 CB750 K6 and I really love it. I'm new to motorcycling, been riding about a year. Got into cafe racers after going to a few monthly Grease 'n Grind punk rock, hot rod gigs in town. Learner bike was an '83 CM450E, but I grew out of that quickly. Picked up the CB in fairly good shape. Last owner was a heavy duty mechanic who looked after ski lifts at a resort. But it did sit unused outside for 2 years in the moderate for Canada west coast climate.
Aftermarket addys - K&N pods, lowbars, Mac 4-1 black exhaust, some weird oil gauge thingy on the side, and an air cooled radiator thingy on the front. And I built an idiot light cluster with bare bulbs that I am really proud of (previous owner removed the indicator panel, but I have a bad habit of leaving my blinkers on!)
Did some preliminary work on the bike and learned an incredible amount about engines in a really short amount of time, thanks to this board. I learned about cam chain tensioning and how these bikes are noisy and I probably ain't going to get rid of it completely. I learned more than I ever wanted to know about brake bleeding and the corrosive properties of brake fluid. Which means I'm about to learn all about rattle can paint jobs. I popped open the float bowls and to my surprise and relief they look pretty spottless, so I may hold off on a carb clean/sync, unless that would eliminate the constant light friction/grinding sound from the engine? Yes valve timing as well is on the list, (before the sync i think right?!). And I replaced all the old stiff cables with short stock honda ones for low bars. And of course fluids and plugs. I'm about to replace my top break line which was cracked and hopefully responsible for the mushy and dragging brakes (rebuilt caliper and new pads), and my throttle cables (the B one snapped mid cable, how do you explain that? I thought they where useless).
Anyways, this sure is fun and educational. Someone told me when I was learning bikes are money pits, and I'm starting to understand why. Especially with a bike that is a year older than I am myself.
So stay tuned for a barrage of newby questions.
I'm off for the last ride of the season. It's sunny and above freezing for the last time for a few months.
Thanks!
Don
Here she is in her spraycan glory, I like the scheme but orange is too flashy for me. Gonna go with the same 2 tone and stripes theme but swap orange for a creamy white.
This is the little panel I made to house the signal and neutral lights. Blew a few fuses before I re-engineered with electrical tape. Hopefully it's water and fire proof now!
This is the oil guage. It reads either zero when off, or 100 when running. Seems overkill when a light would do the same thing, but it sure looks cool.
