Engine out for winter, valve seals, rings, what else?
« on: December 14, 2008, 07:39:09 pm »
I took advantage of the unusually warm weather tonight, pulled my engine, and transferred it to the basement. I am planning on doing valve seals for sure - probably piston rings too. Is there anything else I should definitely consider doing this long winter?

Thanks for the advice,
Adam

I should also add that I want to pull off the head to either paint or chrome it. Any idea how much the latter would cost?

You got to take the head off to change the stem seals anyway so thats a gasket set, all the seals have to be very old and with it out i personaly would split the cases , change the camchain and give the tensioner mechanism a good going over as they are always suspect

I started with my 750 oil leak fix, and am now into the "since you have it out of the frame" stage.
Most members have advised to go with the OEM gaskets. Their are plenty of small "details"
you may want to consider, especially if you get down to the rings. (relap valves, ring size, honing, circlips, install techniques..on and on)
I just beadblasted and repainted mine and they look GREAT. There are many posts on this subject, just search. The big thing I have learned, is that if you do bead blast, make sure you THOUROGHLY clean out all cavities and oil passages. I though I did a good job, but desided to give it one more going over and found enough sand in a few ports to KILL my cam.
If you have no transmission problems, getting into the cases may be agressive / expensive / time consuming. I have been advised that a properly maintained bottom end should be good for 60,000+. My buddy has 62000 on his, no problems. I see yours is a 500/550, I know the 500's had some shortcomings in the clutch department.
Here are some good links, and the links to my posts.

I'm impressed......
I carried my 750K motor to my basement and my boys nearly fell into my boots.  Bruises everywhere...
Carrying it out...I will have help.

actually...I had pulled the head and cylinder first... : ;D

Yup, I've already read a lot of that post. I'm currently making a shopping list. I will start a project thread and post a link to it here.

Thanks!
