80 750F pickup coils on 82 650SC ?
« on: December 16, 2008, 06:09:21 PM »
Can't seem to locate a source for pickup coils for my 82 650sc

Was wondering if a set off an 80 CB750F would work ? (found a used set on ebay)
they look the same except for the mounting plate.

650 plate mounts with 3 screws the 750 looks like it's 2 screws ?

Is there any physical or electrical diff. between them that might prevent them working ?
Both bikes use the same spark units and ign. coils  If that makes any differance ?

Or a source for aftermarket parts ?

i can't say for sure. but i can say the coils on my 80 650c came from a ninja,  if all the other ignition parts are interchangeable than those should be too right.

i'm running the ignition coils(where the plug wires come from) i believe there from a 84 zx6. huge improvement over my stock 29 year old coils

Thanks ghost I will remember that for future Ref.
but my ign. coils ohm out ok i think ? ( 2 ohms each )

It's the ( pulse gen.?  pickup coils ? ) that I need to replace, 1 is open, infinite resistance  the other is 540 ohms

I can't seem to find a source for new ones so I'm looking for used ones, found
a set on ebay but they're for an 80 750F

yea that's what I'm thinking too

just finished reading Soos thread
http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=32097.msg332028#msg332028

and it sounds like the mounting plate is diff. on the 750, hoping the pickups are the same  and will mount to the 650s plate.
guess it will be a cheap test if someone doesn't run the price up on ebay

Thanks guys

i can't say for sure. but i can say the coils on my 80 650c came from a ninja,  if all the other ignition parts are interchangeable than those should be too right.

Sorry ghost.
those coils are almost identical to stocker 650 units are, but the pickups on a ninja are WAYYYYYYY different.
Not that it wouldn't work, but you gotta ask yourself how much $$ in machining and custom wiring you are willing to go through.

Interesting you are tryto use a DOHC 750 unit...

I used a DYNA2000 kit for a DOHC 750, and the timing plates are WAYYYY different.
different OD, different timing for the pickups, etc...
However you can take those pickups off the 750's plate and install them on the 650's timing plate.
A little solder to attach the new pickups to your existing wiring, and you should be good.
If you do this, you will want to do a REALLY accurate timing check on both banks(1&4, 2&3) of cylinders. Got a dial indicator, or a good timing light?
Yes, the pickups are identical(same #'s on both the 650 and 750), except the wiring to them from the connector.(the 750's wiring setup is shorter when timed correctly in a 650)

ANYTHING will work if you try hard enough.
If you would rather go with a 650 timing plate, I'll sell you one if you want.
Send me your defunct timing plate and pickups and I'd give a discount on the price of my timing plate.

Or at least it was for me.
'79 cb650 and a donor bike '79 DOHC750...

The front end is a nice upgrade if looking for a dual disk setup on the '79's stock tripple tree.
steal the forks, MC, and calipers, transplant it all on the '79/80 tripple trees.
Take the disks and mount bolts, and put them on the stocker reverse stamped cb650 front tire(make sure to use the 750's mount bolts, they are a bit longer for the extra disk)

Whala... easy, stock looking dual disk conversion for the earlier style cb650 frame('79/80)
Oh, and you need the front fender off the 750 as well.
It's plastic(lighter than a stock 650's metal one), but I have yet to have it touch my tire from flexing.
Overall it adds weight and a TON more stopping ability.

i'm ranting ... gotta go.

Was wondering if you ever got that answered
http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=32097.msg332028#msg332028

since i posted this  a couple of pickup unit have come up on ebay for the 650
that i'm watching if they don't pan out I'll give you a call thanks

still trying to see if this bike will even run haven't been able to start it yet
but if is does i would be REAL interested in knowing how the DYNA system works on it
right now all i know is the electrics (charging and ignition) are shot on it, exc. ign.coils and maybe the spark units ?
if the motors in good shape will try to fix everything for a daily driver
really like the looks of these bikes and would be a lot more comfortable than
my XR500

sorry I'm a little slow at this, 1st forum exp. trying to get pics. cut down

Thanks guys
Mike

Does anyone know how to test the spark units (OKI MPS 200) ?

clymers says take to dealer for testing or substitute a known good one

can't find any thing searching about how they work

aren't they just some kind of capacitor to store a charge to fire the coils ?
they aren't melted or leaking will assume there ok.

any info on how they work ?

Mike.
