Marvellous engine product?
« on: December 18, 2008, 07:50:51 PM »
Anyone know anything about a product called Marvellous? Not sure if thats how you spell it.
My father mentioned it, I guess it's supposed to help free up valves, lube the engine, and make it run better.
Said he used it in his air planes, and tractors, (back in the 60's and 70's) and he said it would probably work for my bike?

Anyone know anything about this?
Is it even still around?
Or a product of similar traits?

Could be Marvel's Mystery Oil.  I use it for lubing stuff, comes in spray, squirt, and other containers.

Never heard of it, probably American like STP or Wynns.
If it contains anti friction properties it's not good for Motorcycle engines with the clutch running in the same oil that lubes the rest of the motor, it makes them slip.

ah, Marvel's mystery oil, thats most likely it.  haha, he's getting old, and memory isn't the best anymore, plus he hasnt used it since the 60's. At least he was pretty close on the name.

As I recall he said it would be added to the gas, not the oil.
Would that still cause in some way, the clutch to slip?  I would think it wouldn't have any effect on the clutch.

My Dad used to make a "cocktail" with Marvel, and something else, and pour it down the carb of the car.  He'd come close to choking it out once or twice, then dump the rest down and choke the engine out.  It would fill the neighborhood with blue/grey smoke.  I was afraid the fire department would come a runnin'.

marvel's mystery oil can be ran in either fuel or oil. in fact, it is great for diesel engines, since most of the sulfur has been removed from the diesel fuel. it does work as a friction modifier in engine oil, but samcr750 makes a good point.
it does work great as a penetrating oil, so if you have a stuck motor or valves, pouring some in and letting it sit for a few days it will likely come free.
marvel may also be known as a blending agent. there is another product from hydrotex called essentialube that is along the same lines. if you put a screw driver, or other metal object in a shallow container the essentialube will actually wick up the screw driver. pretty amazing product. like marvel it has too many uses to list.

aorta got onto another tangent there, but i hope it helps someone eventually.

I haven't used it, (Like Sammy, I'm not a native) but I've only seen good things about it on this site. Do a search under "Marvel's Mystery Oil" and you'll probably find heaps of info. Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

I can't say I have seen it over here in the UK but Wynns and STP made the same sort of stuff, and we also had a brand called RedX.
Just about every gas station had a RedX dispenser, for every gallon you put in the tank, you would get X amount of RedX.
In the early 70s I was sponsored by Wynns and was invited to a big demonstration of their products in Manchester.
I can honestly say that all their products did exactly what they were designed to do.

It has been around forever. As already said.....I wouldn't recommend it in anything with a wet clutch. If you use it to free up an engine....change the oil before running it.As far as top end cleaning.....I would use Seafoam instead of Marvel.

I think first I'm just going to try it as a fuel additive, see what that does, see if there is any big improvments.
Says it can also help clear carbs when used as a fuel additive on their website
We'll see what happens.

when i bought my bike i took out the plugs and poured a small amount in each one and let it sit for a few days.
worked like a charm. bought it at auto zone. i use it as a fuel and oil additive but only because the website suggests it.
but i am not going to swear by that.

I use it as a fuel additive and my engine loves it.

"old guys" with crusty leathers on crusty old bmw's seem to swear by it...

I would say its greatest power of mystery is lubricating the lower intake valve guides and carb slides preventing wear.
slow and steady does nothing.

Just cruised the MMO forum and found a discussion regarding the product interest in the UK and other parts of the Olde Country. See this link and note post by 'misterchevy': http://www.marvelmysteryoil.com/index.php/forums/viewthread/18/

Ahhh, the hillbilly tuneup. It loosens stuck valves nicely. I have a couple of friends who use this procedure. If no Marvels around they use transmission fluid. One of them claims that Marvels is just scented transmission fluid anyway. I cannot confirm this though.

I do add it to my fuel though, seems to help the ol girl run nice.

I use it in my bikes, 88 hurricane and an 82 cm250c and it worked good as a fuel additive. keeps my carbs cleaner and I had better luck not having problems in the middle of the summer. I recomend it :)

It probably says on the jug to use it in your oil but it won't say use it in a Honda motorcycle (or any engine with a wet clutch). Should work fine as a fuel additive or air tool lubricant.
