Topic: Question about the V-Twin engines.

Every now and then I run across some of the newer V-Twin Hondas (hehe post 80's) and for the right price I'd be willing to pic one up. My brother in law has one and I like the sound. But my question is, how hard are they to work on compared to our SOHC engines? I realize this is mostly an opinion question, but I would appreciate any info anyone is willing to give. I am going to try and pick up another bike to ride while I do some work on my beloved 73 CB500, and I would like to get a slightly larger cruiser type bike, and the V-Twins fit the bill. They aren't the only ones I am looking at, but as they do pop up now and then they are something for me to consider.

Here is one near me. I think the price is a bit much considering the mileage, but that is just me.

I have a 1988 Honda HawkGT which is a 650cc V twin of Shadow heritage. They are SOHC engines with 3 valves and rocker arms. I rebuilt, the top end on mine, pumped up the displacement. To answer your question, they are easy. Good mid-range. Very reliable.

Relative to a sport bike DOHC, 4 valve, shim bucket, set up.

Thanks for the info. So it sounds like if I am ok working on the one I got, then the V-Twin style bikes are nothing to be intimidated by. Yet one more style to add to my list of bikes I can buy!

$950 seems high for a bike that won't run. The tech "thinking" it's the carbs is a whole lot different from him "knowing" it is the carbs.

Looks good otherwise, I'd offer $700 (a dollar per CC) and see what he says. (He HAS to sell because he's moving, after all... my bikes move with me.  )

$950 is high also since it has 63k miles. Sadly, I don't have the scratch to off him.
