Author Topic: 1972 CL350 Ground up Restoration (Read 78636 times)

I have a CL350 I want to restore this winter.

Problem:
The seat and the tank do not meet properly, there is a 2 " space.
The tank fits into its rubber mounts front and back
The seat hinges line up as well as the locking mechanism.

Hard to tell which needs replacing.

Anyone know of a good site with some photos of these old birds

Can't help you with the photos, but it's not uncommon for the seat pan to be bent (u shaped) disturbing the overall alignment. Some people feel compelled to use the seat as a lift point when putting the bike on the center stand.

Def not that, but thanks for the try.

I'm thinking that perhaps the seat is from another year of CL350 and thus the hinges and lock line up but maybe the seat was longer on my 72 model.

Judging from my cl360 the tank is shorter and the seatpan is actually longer in the front than a cb350. The hinges line up but w/ a gap. I'd say you need a cl seat(or pan).

I emailed a guy on Ebay selling seat covers for all years of the CL and asked him what length my K5 should be. He indicated 24 1/2 inches.

I need to measure it tomorow to see if that is the issue.

Here's a couple of photos of the '73 CL350 I just sold

Hated to see it go. The seat was reupholstered but the guy who did it stayed as close to the original as he could. Also not sure if any differences between the '72 and '73.

I'd really like to see your bike when you're done with it.

I'm haveing a hard time finding a seat for my 70 CB 350 and the local salvage yard has a couple sweet cl's. They look like the same seat. I'll take some pics and measurements for you today. The one I was looking at loo;s just like the one on my CB350. It flip's up from the front not the standard side flip.

Thanks 78K550, My side cover has a triangle under the 350 on the emblem. I don't see it on that bike.
Seat looks great, but is it from a 72/73?
Can you provie me with the junkyards name or Ph number. I could use those rear tail lights as well.

not sure how they do there pricing over the phone to a stranger. I hear of people getting outragous quotes from them and the always seem to give me a fair price or better. The counter guys want a few of my Bultaco parts so I figure until he gets it from me he will give great deal's

Plus he is a really nice guy.
I was asking him about my 350 seat and found one in the yard. I asked how much? He smiled and asked what kind of shape is it in and I said excellent. He said 60.00, I smiled and said well not that good of shape. All the store workers laughed. I Think it is in great shape. Here is a pic. I'll be picking up the first one.

I'll just shoot some pics and get some prices for you. Then ship them to you.

Rebuilt the carbs, re-set the ponts and put in some new plugs and Vroooom!
Man that feels great. Took it up in the hills for a bit of dirt, ran great, now I don't want to tear it apart for the restoration!

Still no seat yet though

Well, I bought (2) more of these bikes on Ebay for $27.00. I think I just may have all I need now to make (1) real nice one.

Got the seat I needed along with 2 extra motors, wire harnesses, nice set of clean chrome wheels, rear shocks, and a real good set of head light ears! Not to mention enough stuff to keep me busy on Ebay selling for a while.

I will keep posting photos for any one interested in following the restoration this winter.

Well, I tore it APART! this weekend.
Here's all that's left......

Removed the clutch today, have to get in behind and look at the shifter doamahicky. I think something got bent when my daugter crashed it a week or so ago. I also have to remove the top of the engine and replace the cylinder head, it's broken near one of the exhaust bolts.

Frame needs a bit of a weld on the bottom and then off to get blasted and powder coated. All the chrome bits will be redone as well/
My fingers can't wait to spend the next 100 hours or so wet sanding and polishing the engine $:-\$

Well, I got the most of the clutch out, still have to go back and figure out how the inner housing comes off. Back to the manual tomorow. Dropped off the frame a welders today for a spot weld on the frame.

All the engine casings off and after 2 hours with a tooth brush cleaning I came to a conclusion/
Now I see again why not every one does this ground up stuff at home. I luckily have last years projects success to motivate me through the greasy crap cleaning, sanding, polishing and painting to get me through

Do I need a special tool to remove the crazy looking nut inside the oil filter housing on this 350 twin?
Manual says to remove it before I can get clutch housing out?

Tried without removing it and housing sticks on something. Not sure what is holding it from coming out.

Thanks Greg, I ordered one tonight.
I wonder if this will fit my 750s clutch as well. Had to use a hammer and screwdriver on it when I did that clutch.

I bout the special wrench (adapts to a 3/4 drive) from somebody on eBay for 8.99 bucks) I believe it also works for other Honda bikes. The manual says you can make it yourself with a piece of tube, but for that price I don't want to waste my time filing a piece of tube that I don't have.

Once you remove the oil filter (pay attention to the position of the washer below the nut, the script have to face outwards on reassembly) you have to remove the oil pump. That way, you will be able to remove the clutch cage, that have a plunger connected to the oil pump.

Been there, done that.

I don't have the Clymer, but the Haynes have lots of pictures about it. If you PM your email address I can forward you the scans that John (oldbiker) sent me from the CMM magazine. They have lots of useful info on the CB350 restoration.
