cush hub removal cb550.

doesnt seem to show this in my manual, I assumed it just popped out, I wont, there are 4 punch holes around bearing do I need to make some kind of spanner to unscrew??? thanks jeep.

do you just want to remove the part labelled #8?  it should be pressed in against the rubber parts #4.   It may be in there a bit tight, and with years of gunk and grime holding it in there.  I recommend that you hose some WD-40 into the gap around the circumference of the #8 part (sprocket flange) and bolt your sprocket back on finger tight...lay the hub sprocket side down, if you can get the edge of each boot onto the sprocket, you can get a good fingerhold on each side of the hub and pull up, don't worry about pulling straight upward, it's just the sprocket carrier jammed into the cush rubbers, so wiggle if you have to.

Conversely, when reassembling a cush drive, always hose everything down with WD-40 and slip it together.  WD won't hurt rubber parts, they rather enjoy the effects.

Those four punched in spots are to hold in a threaded bearing retainer, #3 in the diagram, I think.  To remove the threaded bearing retainer, you must lightly drill out the punched dimple areas to allow the part to unscrew. once the bearing is replaced and the cap is threaded back on, you'd need to hit those spots again with a punch to keep the retainer in place.  The process is referred to as "staking" a search for that term will find more info.

thankyou ! Id already soaked it with wd.  but at least I know im on track, thanks for info on bearing retainer too, thats also coming out.

ok, lemme try again, just how hard should I whack this thing?? has anyone ever had one seize in there? Ive heated it (just short of smelling burning cush hub)  this thing does not want to come out?? Will PB blaster hurt cush hub??  Ive never had this prob before but this is the first honda wheel ive stripped down.

ok, ive tinkered with this hub off and on since I posted this, I still cant get it, ive heated it , pb blaster, had both my boys  help hold & twist it. could it be reverse thread?? Im really stumped & I really need to get it coated & I hate to admit defeat and take it to the dealer to do. . thanks jeep.

Just went through hell getting this done on the Lester wheels I have for a build.

We used a disc dremel around the area where the punch had been banged and finally pulled it loose.

We did use a tool buddy had built.........2 hardened steel bolts screwed into a steel bar aligned with holes on hub. Heave Ho ;D

thanks , Ill keep on trying, I wish id never unlace the wheel first, at least id of had some leverage. Im skeered to put it in a vice for fear of busting the hub.

Im fairly sure these threads are toast, ill be needin a hub, I had a 750 hub early 70's wont work, what other hub choices do I have?  Appreciate any info on what swaps should I not be able to find one, And when I get another hub how do I avoid this again,  I talked to the local honda mech, he said he'd done a few but wouldnt gaurantee results.

500 AND 550 71 TO 76 ARE THE SAME BUT CHECK THE CAST DRUM SURFACE CAREFULLY AS THE DRUMS BRAKE UP

Dayum, that's almost like that oil filter cover that got a hacksaw to it.
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

yup I had that too on the oil filter, rear engine bolt  and dang near every other thing on this bike.
I made a tool to remove the plate but that wouldnt work, so before i try again ill either have to buy the correct tool or try to make one I can use impact on , this retainer I had to cut in two spots with dremal then it still wouldnt turn, heated , sprayed with pb blaster , you name it. I done it.
