TOTAL ENGINE REBUILD?
« on: October 03, 2005, 06:10:28 AM »
I am gearing up for my next project, and have a K2 with 64,000 miles on it. I was definitely going to do the topend on it, and have been entertaining a total teardown for the fun it, possibly a 836kit?? will the stock rods be O.K. with larger displacement??  What about the transmission?? does it have a service interval??
any tips/links would help..
I looked in the FAQ's and didnt find a whole lot.

When I bought my CB350 the engine was running so I thought at least I would not have to touch it. Then I thought that for peace of mind and for learning it would be good to have a look at it. Look what I found just with opening the top cover...

The gasket says "Asbestos"

The head have what seems a lot of gasket sealer and have a name scratched on it. Probably the mechanic's name, a french name as the bike came from France. You can imagine how the bottom end should be if the sealer has been wandering around. I guess the mechanic is long gone if he dealt with Asbestos often...  :-[

What pisses me off is that the bike had only 8.000 km in the odometer. Such a low mileage and already a rebuild... I'm afraid this bike is going to be a moneypit, so I guess I will have to bite the bullet this time.

OUCH! That looks bad raul.

Well chippy, you can use the stock rods from what I hear unless you decide to cam it up and try to do a significant power increase. Then you want aftermarket rods. Valves are about the same.
I would ask mreick as he knows quite abit about this process.

The rods will be OK unless you beat the life out of it. I'd replace the rod bolts and nuts. Undercutting helps the transmission. How about a cam and some porting?

Update. What it says is not a name, but "Haut Droit". Actually I couldn't read it when I was there, I saw it just in the pic. My poor French knowledge tells me that it means "Up right", enought to believe it was not written during assembly in Japan but during rebuild in France.
