CB750 gas cap pin?
« on: January 15, 2009, 02:37:37 PM »
I want to replace the gas cap on my 71 CB750 k2. Does anybody sell just the pin or do I have to buy something like a complete latch kit on eBay? Or can I make one myself using some sort of small bolt? Thanks.

It is a roll pin of metric size I am sure.  Check the nearest ACE Hardware or a used parts shop.  A junk tank will have just such an item hopefully for free.

I do have a spare tank, but how do I remove the pin without doing any damage to it? And can it be reused?

I seem to recall "Hondaman" was selling kits for both the cap hinge pin as well as the latch. I believe they were threaded stainless with a small nut. You might want to PM him.

I did remove my cap pin very carefully.  You have to be careful not to bend the cap hinge.  I got a real thin punch and started it that way but did not like the pounding.  So I used a thin steel lock pin and a C clamp to push it through the hole.  When I reinstalled it, I used a BB on the C clamp to crimp the edge over again.  Worked fine, just take your time and put some protection on the tank so you do not ding it up.

I have used a cotter pin for both the latch and the cap.  It worked for me.  It also saved the day when the latch broke and I need gas.  Easy to remove!

I've got a few of Mark's (Hondaman) kits, they look really good, but I haven't painted my tank yet, so I haven't tried them yet. Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

I've used two of Hondaman's kits. They work very well.
