Honda Nighthawk 700S....buy or not??
« on: January 19, 2009, 04:24:26 PM »
It's $1200 US, and it has 12k miles on it.

It looks really nice, but after talking to the seller, the bike has a huge rip in the left driver foot peg, and the
front fairing has been repainted.

I asked him if the levers and exhaust cans have any scratches or damage and he says "no".

But he later mentioned that the tank looks like it has 2 emblems on it and it looked like someone ripped one set off
at one point.

The OEM seat is long gone...replaced with a really nice Corbin seat.

He says no leaks.... ::)

And here's the pictures.....going to look at it tomorrow morning....

He's only had it for 1 year, and the only maintenance done to it since he had it, was replace the plugs, oil and filter, and have the carbs adjusted.

What do you all think....is it worth $1200??

I just know, with 4 other people coming to look at it after me, some goof will give him his asking price...

I'm still looking for that 3rd gen Trans am, but I've always wanted a 700s in my stables.....

Help is appreciated

Seems like it's worth it to me.  Around here (Orlando) it'd be going for closer to $2K.

I grew up around Akron.  In Richfield, actually.

Good luck with it.

I bought a brand new '84 700S and I gotta tell you that if I knew back then what I know today I NEVER would have sold it.
W/O question one of the best motorcycles I've ever owned; not to mention one of the very few last motorcycles Honda produced that had a soul.
As far as the maintenance, what he has done to it is about all that can be done to it.
Self-adjusting valves, shaft drive make for practically a maintenance-free bike.
The one thing that bothers me is such few miles for a 20+ y/o bike.
Check out the fairing/cockpit mounting hardware to see if there are signs that it has been removed/replaced.
In regards to the fuel tank emblems, the clear coat would have to have been "removed" in order to take an emblem off. The emblems were actually decals and striping on top of the paint but under the clear coat.
You might also check the rim lips for signs of numerous tire changes. With only 12K miles showing there shouldn't be much tire-tool marks on the rims.
Good Luck to you. The Nighthawk S was one helluva motorcycle. If you end up buying it be sure to post some pics.
