I too have a 78K and it is a great bike. Oil threads go on forever, may I suggest you do a search on oil and you will see what I mean. It is a fair question, but passions run very high on this topic.

Hey, the guy is new I want him to get off on the right foot. Don't worry the Sharks will smell the oil in the water and be here soon enough.

I personally like Rotella Deisel. I like it because it has the Zinc phosphate which was taken out of other oils since it would kill a catalytic converter. Since we don't have one, we can use it.

OK Scunny, let the games begin!!!!!

Thanks Oldschool that helps alot

I am not a newb to forums. I search when i need a host of opinions on a range of topics. This is specific, and takes someone 10 seconds to list the 3 or 4 oils they are using, and it will help anyone else browsing who may want a quick answer too....everyone wins

What about fork oil??

sorry, I've seen the pitched battles oil can lead to.
for forks Honda used to use ATF which equates to about a 10weight oil, specific oils are available 5 thru 20 weight depending on use and load

Ok, I'll bite.  I love a good oil thread.

Rotella synthetic, honda 10 wt fork oil (though a touch of teflon is going in there soon per Hondaman's recommendation), and whatever dot 3 is available.  Regular gas (just thought I'd throw that in there) and seafoam occasionally.  I also seafoam the oil ~yearly.

SeaFoam in the oil... hmmmm I had always wondered if that would work.  I'm careful what goes in the crank due to the wet clutch.  Sure don't want anything that is going to plug up the pores of the friction plates!  Guess SeaFoam would more then likely CLEAN the pores.  These bikes were engineered in the pre-synthetic days, so I'll stick with dyno!

I'd been running Castrol or Valvoline 20W50, but last summer switched to Rotella 15W40.
I use ATF in the forks, it stopped the leaking in the original seals, and DOT 5 in the front brake.  I've had DOT 5 on my 4-4-2 since 1984, with no problems, so I figured it would be good for the old Honda as well.

I have always run castrol 10w 40, dot three(but wanna switch to dot 5) I also have heard good things about the rotella and that's what we always used on all the tractors at the turkey farm...
Hmmmm me using castrol and rotella and talking good about it, Does that make me a double agent?..... :-\

I use the rotella synthetic. Awesome stuff, I use it in my wife's rebel as well and the results were good there.
I use a synthetic brake fluid, dot 4 style. I use regular gas as unless you have a hopped engine, anything else is a waste. I will use seafoam in the gas sometimes but not required for sure. Seafoam in the oil I would not do EXCEPT to clean the case out before a change. I use honda shock oil 7wt.

Now that it's been brought up I should mention that when I said I use seafoam in the oil, that was during the last couple hundred miles before a oil change.

It's my understanding that Rotella is chock-a-block full of detergent so it may not matter much anyway.

Gribbs, you asked an honest question and we who have been around awhile have been through oil threads. As a fellow 78K owner I realize we have to stick together.

Engine oil is a matter of taste. I like Rotella since it has tried and true additives you cannot find in Auto oil any more. The wide viscosity works for me since the temperatures vary a lot around here. I am for too lazy to change the oil for each season. I change it twice a year with filter and frequent changes I feel make a big difference. We have one member that changes at high mileages and he as a stupid amount of miles on the original and unrebuilt motor. I don't know what brand he uses, but it was nothing special.

With brake I use Dot 4 and have used others, it stops the same. I do change that every year since it is a small amount and it discolors quickly.

Fork oil depends on how you ride and how you want your bike to feel. We all have different mileages on our forks. springs do fatigue so one viscosity may feel better than another. I like a softer fork since I want a smoother ride over bumps. If you crank it in the twistys a lot, you may have to tinker till you get what you want.

Seafoam in the tank is very popular. Does it work, I dunno, but I use it. I do know a good run on the highway for an hour or more, working that motor hard seems to make them run better. These motors like to run.

The answer to your question, is that there is no one size fits all answer.
