Topic: Question for anyone who's used Berrymans carb dip

I'm curious what it's supposed to look/smell like when it's new. I purchased a gallon can at Auto Zone and used it for the first time today to clean carbs. I stored it in a warm area on a wooden shelf per instructions since purchasing a month ago. It's a brown syrup like consistency and doesn't seem to do much or have any solvent odor. I left a carb in there for over an hour and it was pretty much exactly the same as it went in. Dirty/oily on the outside and deposits in the corners inside. Was I expecting too much, like for it to anything for example? Thanks.

You may need to brush or rinse in really hot water.  I'll dig up of picture of my carbs when I find it.  Worked well for me...

Thats what I used (a few years ago). I still have it (left it at work). Do you have the little basket to dip the parts in? I put all the small parts in and tie wires to the larger parts.That way I can pull the wire out of the dip and swish it around.Grab the basket every hour or 2 and swish it around also. After 4 hours or longer.....rinse everything in hot water and blow with compressed air.Put the next carb into the dip and start assembling the one you just pulled out.Also.........when you are cleaning the castings out....I like too use spray carb cleaner and a small needle type tip on my blow gun and really make sure all orifaces are cleaned well.

I did get them (two so far) very clean by using a brush to agitate after the soaking. It seems the spray cleaner did much more when I was hand cleaning them then the dip did. Maybe I was expecting too much out there when I hoisted them out of the dip can with my solvent proof gloves and goggles and everything. I definitely didn't expect it to be brown before it was used. The second carb that soaked for a couple of hours didn't come out looking any better but everything brushed off quite easy. BTW, I did get all of the passages and emulsion tubes perfectly cleaned out; thanks.

The Berrymans breaks up all the crap.....you won't get them clean with carb cleaner alone. Sounds like you are on track with your rebuild.

I leave jets and needles (non rubber tipped) as well as bowls overnight and then hit with hot water and dish detergent.  I did try simple green as suggested on here and it does a nice job on the bowls and bodies.  Just be careful with rubber and plastic around these cleaners and you will be fine.  Enjoy.

My dip can is over 15 years old, still brown, still works fine.

Mine is at least 10 years old and still works... these were pretty nasty...


oh.... and that question about the smell......

... try Superfund Site in a can!
