GT750 Suzuki Restoration Progress
« on: February 03, 2009, 01:42:36 PM »
Fellas, I'm sorry about having to start another thread on the GT750 restore. I had so many photos in my files that I had to re-organize. When I set-up new categories within Walagata hosting, all of the existing photo links were re-addressed, so none work any more.

Here are some more pics though for those interested in the Suzuki water buffalo. These are well built. I picked up this engine - still missing a lot of bolt-on components - it's heavy! If you ever wonder why the GT750 is the quietest engine many magazines ever tested - look at those cylinders and the water jackets around them! The piston clearance is set to 1.8 thousandths - about half of what an air-cooled 2 stroke gets bored to. Very "over engineered".

Regards,
Gordon

Everything looks as perfect as usual. Just a quick question, though: How do you attach the "water cooled" emblems to the side of the cylinders? I see there are no mounting tabs so is it some sort of miracle glue?

Those "Liquid Cooled" foil decals have 3M adhesive behind them. They peel and stick. I would have had them cleared-in, but this is powdercoat - clear. It is supposed to hold up under cleaners, gas, and pressure washing. The top of the case is also powdercoat.

I'm feeling all inadequate, again...Great work Gordon..I'll post up some pics of my 1973 Kawasaki Z1 when I've got her how I want her.

We're into Honda's but there's lots of other great old bikes out there, just ask Bill etc....

Well, progress got slowed when I lost those 100's of correct "S" bolts, clamps, specialty fasteners, and some other hard-to-find pieces after zinc plating. I've purchased 2 sets of carburetors since - just trying to get all of the linkages, screws, and springs replaced. The US Postal Service still hasn't delivered that package shipped on the 23rd of December. I also purchased a new OEM front/rear harness, but all of the switches, connectors, and sheathing for the components connecting to those new harnesses had to be sourced and replaced/repaired.

I may sound as though I'm complaining, but not at all - while the lost pieces have taken me months to replace and have plated, it has given me time to take other things to the "next" level. I bought my own heavy duty 1 horsepower 1750 rpm buffer. Those covers are ones that I did after taking some practice on spares. Here again, the time and hands-on part of this hobby is what I enjoy most.

I still have the paint work to be done, several pieces to have chromed, and my seat pan is powdercoated and being covered with a new factory "GT" cover and new foam. My Deals Gap goal for early May won't be possible, but perhaps late May I'll get to start riding.

Enough talk - here are some updated photos - Regards, Gordon

Guys, she is done - I finally got the pipes repaired and chromed, the bodywork painted, and the experimental optical ignition installed. She runs perfectly and is heading to Barbers next week....

Almost 1 year ago that I picked this up at Barbers from an eBay purchase. It's been fun.

I'll have it in the VJMC area all weekend, I'll be working the booths, the show, and the pancake breakfast.

Next is this Sears "motor bicycle" - seriously, I am collecting parts for my own replica. I'm waiting on a friend to catch-up with parts since we're doing them as a pair - His Gray/Red and mine Gray/Blue - both will be at Barbers in 2010. If he had not had a brain tumor earlier this summer, we'd have been done with them already. I've got the engine, frame, large White balloon tires, new crank and sprockets, plus the springer front-end. It should be a fun project for both of us. We've agreed to build the mathcing pair depite the fact he's almost 200 miles away.

Regards,
Gordon

guys, the pictures dont even come close to doing this bike justice, in person it's just amazing. nicer than a new bike.
