Help with my headlight!!!
« on: February 06, 2009, 09:20:44 AM »
Okay, my bike's a 72 cb750 cafe and it's my first classic bike. My taillight has never worked for whatever reason, just no juice to the wire. So when I did my fender elimination, I figured that I would run a wire from my headlight to power the taillight, which worked fine... Until my rear tire ate my tag bracket and taillight. I guess my clearance issues WEREN'T worked out after all. The reulting mass of twisted metal pulled all of the wires out at the splices. This caused the wire that was run to my tailight to ground out (i'm assuming) and now my headlight doesn't work... and therefore the taillight doesn't work either. I've put everything back together and cured my clearance issue by mounting the tag elsewhere. But the light won't work. Everything else does. The headlight bulb is still good. Someone help! I don't believe in taking my bike to a shop if it can be avoided. Is there a fuse I blew?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
 Alex

if it grounded out, it probably blew a fuse. i would check there first. it thats good, check for power to the bulb, from the switch, etc. should be pretty straight forward

Yep, run down the electrical schematic tracing the electrical path and testing along the way. Check the connectors to the fuses also. Electrical issues can be buggers, get a continuity tester along with a voltmeter.

Okay, so the headlight works again! What did i do you ask? Nothing... The sohc4 gods smiled upon me and the other day when I turned the key it just came on. So I'm gonna leave it be till it goes fubar again. A new problem has arisen though... Valve tappping! I'm gonna start a new thread for that one though. :(

Problems that "fix themselves" also tend to re-break themselves.

True enough, and I think I have quite the wiring issue due to some other electrical gremlins, but it'll have to hold until I get ready to rewire the whole thing (soon).
