Side cover repair - CB750 K
« on: October 07, 2005, 06:49:07 PM »
What is everyone using to glue/epoxy/fiberglass the plasric side covers of the early 750 K's? I am planning to repair one on my K5 but not sure what will hold the best when glue/patching from inside the side cover. All advice is greatyly appreciated. Thanks. I am sure someone can recommend the right glue.

i have used jb weld its flexible and rigid .it also works well to make the ears that hold cover onto bike. 2 yrs so far and still holding. scuff back of side cover first with sandpaper to make sure its clean/try to get some in crack and wipe painted side clean immeadiatly, keep watch for a couple hours some may seep thru crack to painted side

I used an Epoxy resin--not fibreglass resin--with a woven glass mat instead of chopped strand comes out heavy but worked fine

I roughed up the plastic with some 60 grit sandpaper & a course file (for the nooks & crannies).  Then I glassed it with an epoxy resin & cloth mat.  I decided to do the entire inside of the cover to protect against further cracks & breaks.  It's held up really really well.  It is heavier than a stock side cover, but with the price & scarcity of new/used ones, I'm willing to add an extra few ounces to the total weight of my bike.

Also, for the front holes & cracks, you can mix super glue with baking soda (as a filler). Then sand smooth & repaint.  That works better for smaller cracks & pinholes.

Fairing and side covers on a couple '82 Hondas I have are made of ABS and you can use ABS cement (like plumbers use).  It chemically bonds (melts) the plastic for a very strong repair.  If the older ones are ABS too this works great.  You can even buy sheets and fabricate patches.

I roughed up a coated the insode with  JB Weld. I also used a silicone paste on lubricate the rubber so they would pull of easier to prevent too much flex pulling them off.
