17mm vs stock oil filter bolt
« on: February 09, 2009, 02:54:42 PM »
I bought the after market 17mm oil filter bolt shown in the picture below. Comparing it to the stock bolt I noticed the stock bolt's oil flow holes are beveled for better oil flow and the after market one's holes are not. My questions are:
1. Does it matter?
2. If it does matter and I get out my dremel to port the little holes, should I remove the check valve mechanism first and
3. If I remove the check valve mechanism by punching out the set pin, is it difficult to get it back together?
As always, thanks a bunch,

Never bothered

(1) Make sure you do not cross thread the bolt

(2) DO NOT overtighten

I'm with Bryan. I fitted these on every single one of my sohc4 bikes and never had a problem.

I am pretty sure that Epco makes them. I bought 2 brand new ones in the packages at Barber for $15.00. I am all for originality but in this instance I will go for the 17mm head over the smaller one any day.

It looks like Partnmore sells them for the 400, 550, 650 and 750K and F SOHCs also. $8-$10.

A little anti-sieze on the threads will help out too.

Thanks guys, I'll leave it alone. I like the anti-seize suggestion though. I also noticed the threads on the 17mm are no where near as nice as the stock if you look at the picture. I'll use the anti-seize and use the torque value to tighten.

Just to finish this off, I looked at a buddy's 17mm and his had the beveled holes just like the stock so I guess it really does matter where you get them because they are not all the same and apparently his seller thought the bevels were important. My advice would be to look closely at the picture if you're looking to buy one.

I thought that, according to readings on the site, bigger head should not be used because it can bring you to damage threads into engine case.  It seems that Honda preferred a stripped bolt head than a stripped engine case.

I think everyone including Honda has learned form this.
The larger bolt head allows easier removal of stuck threads.
This forum thread states using a lubricant or anti-seize on the threads when you reassemble and don't over tighten and use the correct torque setting and you'll be fine. Remember the O rings provide the seal, not the tightening.
