Greatest year of CB750
« on: February 11, 2009, 10:52:55 AM »
I am shopping around and I know for sure I am going to get a CB750 SOHC, the only problem is that I can't narrow down which year to look for. I have done a little bit of research on what year is the better choice but I would like to hear the opinions of my new mentors. I am seeking an everyday commuter bike with balls that I want to turn into a cafe racer. So far I am on the right track right? Thanks for the help everyone, great forum!

"Greatest" is a subjective judgment, you'll get varying opinions on which 750 year is best.  All of them have quirks of one kind or another, but I don't think that any of them would be a bad choice.

Yea I know this topic is subjective but thats why I want to hear opinions too. Maybe I should have put "favorite year of CB750." Oh well lets hope we get a good debate going

There was a relatively healthy recent discussion on the merits of at least two model years of cb750, a link for which is below. You might have better luck trying to narrow down your criteria. "Greatest" will likely warrant you many different worthwhile (and worthless) opinions. See below for examples of both...

Oh come on this is easy enough...it would be a 1971 or early 1972 CB750  ;D (the 69s clearly are too expensive  ;)).

Instead of searching for a given year, just buy the best, lowest mileage bike you can find and put your signature on it.

This really is excellent advice. I wouldn't pay more than $750-$1000 for anything. A little patience and good timing will find you many decent 750s for this price and a low buy-in will free up your hand for the $1000-$2500 you'll eventually put into it.

Good call. Thats exactly what I have planned out but I am really tempted to jump on the 750s deals on craigslist/ ebay but it is looking like $2,000 - $3,000. Like you said, I am going top be dumping a couple more thousand eventually so I want to keep the cost as low as possible unless there are mods that I was going to do anyway. Does anyone know of a 750 that runs great but needs some work in the looks department for cheap? There is no shame....

From what I understand, the carbs are more adjustable up to the K4. Beyond that the carbs get a little more tricky to tinker with. The F models will be tougher to get parts for (not as many made). Whatever you can get at a reasonable price is what you should get, these were all good bikes (still are in my mind).

69-78  Your question has been answered.
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

If you are looking for a commuter bike that you'll use daily in the summer and care more about parts availability and any particular quirks that might not suite the bike for those purposes, then there might be some models you should avoid.

First, I'd not get a '69 - if you got one for what you are planning to pay, sell it at a profit and get another year.

I have a '75 K.  I think the middle of the model run is about where I'd look for a commuter.

From what I have read Honda made a lot of improvements on the 77 and 78. The downside is they made a lot fewer of those than the 69-76.
As many people have said, find the nicest one you can afford and buy it. Of course I am still kicking myself for not buying the two 350s for $600 that where on craigslist but then I got my K7 so I am not so cranky anymore.

I would go for a 75-76F.  The Super Sports seem to be cheaper to buy though they are less common.  A bit more power, better ride and handling, and a rear disc brake.  It seems that a few people don't think they look as good as a K so the purists won't complain if you cut one up. ;D   Second choice would be a 77-78 F.
