Remember, drinks and bikes don't mix!!!

Drinks and riding don't mix, but beer is completely a must-have tool for working on them!!!   ;D ;D

I do a little in astronomy but the UK weather usually cocks it all up >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(
I like clay pigeon shooting and all types of fishing apart from fly.
My father made his first rod in 1911 which I still have to this day.
It was only a part time job making one a week but he had a 6 month order book that only started to slack off in the early 70s when fiberglass rods became so cheap to buy.
I learned the job in the late 50s and 60s but slacked off a bit in my teens when the bikes took over.
I helped him when his eyes started to go and after he died in 74 i had about 3 months of orders to finish.
I didn't bother after that but I was still asked for cane rods by some of his old customers.
I built my first and last rod, a carbon coarse fishing match rod in 83 in Pascagoula MS. My son still has it and uses it on occasions.
Even just doing custom finishes on manufactured blanks takes that much time, the cost makes the finished article out of the reach of most fun fishermen.
With 2 years to go to 100 years since the first rod and coinciding with me reaching retirement, I might be tempted to carry on in a part time way.

Sam. ;)

Well the two years are up and I'm still working but this weekend I have an appointment with my supplier.
I'm going back into the rod business, wish me luck guys.

Thanks guys, I've still not made up my mind what type of rod I will build as the Centurion.
After that I will not specialise like you do with Fly Rob, the UK market has such a wide and diverse variety of disciplines it would be foolish to not take them all on board.
The market is not like it was 40 to50 year ago when one rod did everything, my youngest son fishes for several specimen species and has different rods for them all and even has a different rod depending on the type of water he is fishing, I swear he has more rods than the average fishing shop. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

you cant (effectively) golf with one golf club, now can you?   ;D
my wife doesnt understand why i have close to 30+ rods mounted in the garage.
ive built everything from 6' broom handles for tuna to 15' surf rods.  my fav build is my 10'6" split grip spin rod for steelhead and salmon.  here's a nice 12lb'er i took with it last fall.
I prefer building fly rods, but specializing certainly limits your audience.
I'll build what someone will pay for ;)
hope all goes well for you.

Thanks Billy, you got me sussed ;)

Rob, with the advent of composite technology, what was a fun passtime has turned into a multi million £/$ industry. Although I am not big into fishing myself and am lacking in the technical side of things, I'm just glad my son takes after his Grand father Sam Green Snr. Jonathan will allways be there for me to answer prospective clients questions that might be beyond me. 8)

Collecting old radios, mostly if I l how it looks looks not value.
Rotary wing aircraft flying(returned).
Holster making(was admired and returning).
Fishing(totally useless at it).
