Spoke Thread size and pitch???
« on: February 22, 2009, 03:43:10 PM »
I have one spoke that the nipple won't start on. Is it just me or is this tread a real odd ball? Seems to be a M4 but has a pitch of 40 threads per inch??? I know its the spoke and not the nipple. Anyone know where I can get a die or maybe a bicycle shop would have one???

Its 1/8"x40 Whitworth.
55 degree thread angle which is why normal SAE  or metric wont fit (they are 60 degree thread angle)
I posted this some time ago, cant remember thread so it probably wont come up during a search.
Weird thing is, Harley Davidson used a metric thread at the time Honda were using old British thread  ???

I haven't been able to locate a die in USA, I was going to get one from Tracey Tools in Britain, probably worth it now exchange rate is more favorable. ( it was $2.13 to £1.00 when I looked previously, now its around $1.45 =£1.00)

Thanks for the reply. I think I found the real problem. I inspected it under a microscope at work and the thread angle is different on the one spoke I'm having a problem with.  :-X

Would this be OK for chasing threads on replated Honda spokes or do you need a thread rolling jig? I have a few in the many hundreds I have had re-plated that are a little tight.
