Flying
« on: February 24, 2009, 04:30:27 AM »
100 years of flying in Canada, still weather plays a part as the Silver Dart doesn't get off the ground yesterday because of weather, hope this replica has better luck than the last one.

I work for Bell Canada and they had this posted on our internal website:

Alexander Graham Bell is best known for inventing the telephone but he also made significant, historic contributions with many other inventions, including the Silver Dart, the first "heavier than air flying machine" in Canada.

Although the Wright brothers' achieved human flight in 1903, Bell's Silver Dart broke many records when it took to the skies in 1909. The Silver Dart was the first plane in North America to fly for more than a mile-its longest flight was 32 km-and it was the first plane to carry both a pilot and a passenger.

Bell's interest in human flight began in 1885, when he bought a vacation home in Baddeck on Cape Breton Island. The strong winds in the area inspired him to explore the dynamics of flight by building and flying a series of increasingly large and complex kites.

In 1907, Bell formed the Aerial Experiment Association with his wife Mabel and other partners. Together they designed several prototypes inspired by Bell's earlier research with kites and the work of the Wright brothers.

Silver Dart marks 100th anniversary today

As part of the anniversary celebrations, a flight of the Silver Dart replica had been scheduled to take place in Baddeck today. Governor General Michaëlle Jean and other dignitaries had planned to attend, but the flight was cancelled due to winter weather.

However, hundreds of spectators were on hand yesterday as Bjarni Tryggvason, a former Canadian astronaut, completed several test flights of the Silver Dart replica over ice-covered Baddeck Bay near Bell's former home. Earlier this month, Tryggvason also flew the Silver Dart replica at the Hamilton International Airport.

Very interesting. I was not aware of this connection. Found this, thought others might be interested, though it is the replica.

Yeah, what Bell didn't mention though was first flight in British Empire back when the sun never set on such, just another example of Canada leading the way.

Loved flying, only time I was scared in Airforce was on a test flight along the coast, I got to go into the nose and ride there (big treat) basically a little metal seat hung out in front of a/c with plexiglass all around it, any how we're whipping along at 100 ft over the straits at maybe 250 knots, SqL (captain) says look at that over there on the intercom, a/c banks to the right towards land we drop a little I strain to see whats going on there's chatter on intercom we get closer to the land we get closer to land, there's a line of hills, cliffs in front, Captain says hey there you go, look at that, co jo says where captains says there, by this time we are just over the shallows and the hills are getting really big, I'm starting to get worried flight engineer says I wonder what kind of seals those are, now at this time we passed seals on the beach what felt like minutes ago, I'm in full panic because of the hills are all I can see, no beach, no seals and I can't remember how to speak on the intercom, I'm hanging on to the little seat trying to lift the Neptune up and finally I bellow the cliffs the cliffs, everyone breaks up and the a/c lifts up over the hills with 200' to clear, I found out later the crew did this all the time to ground crew, also later I went back into a/c to see if I left finger prints in the metal of the seat. Just good clean fun at Comox.
