torque question
« on: October 12, 2005, 06:10:30 AM »
OK.  I've got my carbs back on and she fired up on the first try, but once heated up she backfiring like mad.  I know she probably a little lean as the air filter is totally clogged (a new one is on order) so it's sitting on a shelf right now.  I tried to snug down the headers and had to replace 2 studs at less than 18 ft/lbs.  I need to make sure the headers are tight (sounds like there's a slight leak) but don't want to keep replacing studs unless they're actually bad but I can't find the torque specs in the manual or here online.  Anyone know how tight I should get em?

Thanks
James

Don't now what the torque spec is, can't find one in the manuals. I've always gone with whatfeels right. Have you replaced the exhaust gaskets? If not, that could be causing your leak problem.

The headers can take a fair amount of torque. That is not to mean that you take an air hammer after it but 30 pounds or so should not be a problem. You should replace your gaskets though anytime you remove the headers though as they crush down to form a seal.

Awesome.  I've got gaskets on order and a couple spare heads to get studs from if I break any more.  I thought I should be able to put a little more behind them.  I'll snug them down for now till the gaskets get here.
I brought the girl into work this morning, backfiring and all, and love the feel.  After the chopper it's like riding a really fast bicycle.  She actually handles and I can sling her around like she's 50lbs.  Great feel!
