Aftermarket turn signals
« on: March 05, 2009, 05:26:57 PM »
I've got a '77 550k, the entire electrical system appears to be stock....
Except for the front turn signals. Something is funky about them, but I don't know for sure.

So here's my situation: I'm looking at a set of four aftermarket turn signals that use a 10W bulb in them. From looking at the bulb in my stock signals, they use an 8W bulb.

1- With NO OTHER alterations to my electrical/charging system, how will my wimpy stock charging system handle the few extra watts?

2- Can I simply try to find a lower(than 10W) wattage bulb (not LED) to fit the plug of my new aftermarket lights? I suspect I should be able to find that, and that wouldn't be any different than putting a 50W light bulb in a table lamp that had a 60W right?

I think you're right, bring one of your new directionals to a good autoparts store and ask the guy behind the counter if he can answer a few questions about bulbs.  Skip the chain stores like autozone and pep boys, they're useless generally if you have a question beyond what aisle something is located in.  Around here NAPA stores usually have knowledgeable types behind the counter.

you will be fine and that charging system isnt so whimpy, it wont handle a sub abd amp but your 10 watt bulbs will be fine, be sure to make sure your fuse in that circuit is high enough to handle the extra juice though. using the laws, your old 8watt bulb @ 12V = .8 amps  and your new bulb being 10 watts will bring home about .9amps, so no worries. dont change nothing but those sweet turn signals
