Electrex Rectifier Regulator RR24 wiring
« on: March 09, 2009, 12:50:30 pm »
Anyone know how to wire these up to a '76 cb750K? I got the connector part down, but what do I do with the two flying wires? The black and white ones.

I have the schematic for the old style RR24. The connector is obvious. The schematic shows a red and black rather than a white and black with the black going to the ignition switch and the red going to the + terminal on the battery. I can scan this later tonight and take a look at the bike. Basically the other 2 wires take the place of the rectifier wires I believe. I fried mine so it's no longer installed.

I change my stance. Please refer to my latest post. Click the link for the diagram. It's always best if you look at reference material first.

on hondachopper.com or slickschoppers.yuku.com under tech info you should be able to find a wireing  diagram of the regulator in question.     on another subject; do you happen to know a guy by the name of raeford bell, or david bell from colo.springs? i went to school with them back in the 70's in virginia i lived for a short time ( 1 month) in colo. springs.

White and black wires are for controlling the field coil in the alternator.

Thanks guys, very helpful. One other question, are there points on the wire harness where the flying wires from the reg/rec connect or do you have to fab something to have them connect directly to the ignition switch and battery?

Looking at the stock regulator (not used with this unit) you have black, white, and green wires connected using spade lugs. These are ignition power (black), field coil (white) and ground (green).
The Electrex unit connects through the big plug to the alternator 3 phases (all yellow), ground (green), and battery "+" (red).
So there's already a ground connection to yoyr new reg/rect. It needs the other two to work - black and white.
So these wires are separate. Remove the black and white wires from the old regulator. They will plug right into the Electrex wire spade terminals. You might need a bit of electrical tape to insulate them, the wiring harness terminals have plastic vovers but these might not be completely covering the metal bits.
The regulator needs switched ignition power to run the field coil. If it only had battery power, it would drain your battery rapidly trying to make power when the ignition is off and the motor not running.

Cheers,

I think I spoke too soon.  I'm not sure the black wire is switched power or a battery neg return.  Need schematics/wire diagram for the unit for a determination.

Heya TT!
This is a drop-n replacement unit to use on most SOHC4 bikes. It's a high-side switching field control rectifier. Electrex has made it so you just plug in the rectifier connector and the extra two wires into the matching colour wires from the regulator. There's a pretty complete diagram and trouble shooting guide on the electrex website http://www.electrexworld.co.uk/pdfs/Trouble-Shooting-RR24.pdf.

TT,

Guess that means you pitched it out after I sent it to you for your assessment  ;D   ;)

Yeeeeaahh....what he said!

TT,

It's still hanging up in my garage.  I couldn't find any chemicals to remove the potting compound.  And, my order of micro-excavators went to work to early during the mail shipment process, I think.  Think I should hire some migrant workers to chip at it for a few hours?

 ;D

Besides, I gave you my assessment... FUBAR.
