exhaust swap on a cb550
« on: March 13, 2009, 07:09:29 AM »
Hello all.
I'm going to change the exhaust on a cb550 later model (picture 1), and I can not find the exhaust for this year. I've found the earlier model exhaust (picture 2), at a good price. The question is: will it fit on the later model? Thank you.

...not that I've ever heard of.

The mounting brackets will undoubtedly be different.

The later 550 exhausts are unobtainable now - the early ones are still made!

The brackets are different, so they won't fit without modificatin.  The 4-4 exhaust for the '77 and '78 bikes are rare as hen's teeth.  I picked up a set off e-bay, in decent shape, for $350 (ouch).  I mixed and matched with my old set for the best four.

if you want that look, just buy some Emgo wide mouth mufflers.

grind off the old mufflers from the headers. go online and buy the Emgo wide mouth mufflers from a parts supplier.  mount them to the headers, and bolt them on. you'll still probably need to fab a mounting bracket. but they're more of a straight through muffler.
so they'd be nice and loud.

Thanks for the replies.
In fact, I like most the old ones look. DSS has them on stock. If the only modification that I have to do is changing mounting brackets, I will go that route, if both models have the same diameter on the head, it could be easy to swap.

Let us know how it goes.
Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.
