Engine paint changed color after heat curing
« on: March 17, 2009, 01:25:35 PM »
I just painted my CB750K crank case halves. I cured both in my gas BBQ and they came out a different color than they went in. The color is a sort of gold tint. I'll work on getting some pictures up. Anyone else have this happen before?

My engine slowly turned gold after using Duplicolor engine clearcoat (not the high temp stuff).  Some areas of the head turned almost brown.

Which BBQ sauce did you use?   I've seen this happen with Open Pit, but never with Sweet Baby Ray's ;D
Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

Did you use cherry wood or applewood?  ;D i would have used the oven in the house for more consistancy the grill is going to have all kinds of stuff burning off unless it is brand new.

my 2 cents.....  it's residual smoke that's in there from the grill or briquets etc.

Does it taste or smell like BBQ ?
Yep, I'm the kid that figured out how to put things back together...eventually.

Nope, no bbq sauce. I used Duplicolor Hi-Temp Engine Paint. I'll post a pic when I can.

Gas grill, cleaned first, each case half was cured in two different batches hours apart. Color is uniform and the same on both halves.

i think what might have happened is you actually "baked" it... instead of slowly cured it w/ heat.

see what i mean?

the flame inside the grill as opposed to simple heat might have been part of it too.

How bad is baking versus curing? I'd hate to go through the whole stripping, prepping, masking, painting, curing crap again. Next time, I'm waiting till my girlfriend leaves the house and in the f***ing oven it goes!

If you do throw it in the oven in your kitchen, make sure you've got all the windows open, with fans everywhere, otherwise it'll wreak of paint for days....don't ask me how I know.... ;)

When I painted my engine, I simply ran it, and the engine heat was enough to cure it...

Yep, exact same thing happened to my engine after using the "Hi Temp Ceramic clearcoat".....
Before & after pics....It sort of leaves it looking 'anodized gold'... I would of liked it to stay the color it was when I sprayed it on..

That's it. Mine looks just like that. I'm going to attack it tonight with a can of Aircraft stripper and start over. Crap!
