Waste Chemicals...
« on: March 21, 2009, 12:13:11 PM »
What do you do w/ your oil?
How about carb cleaner?
Degreaser?

Where do you take it?
Does it get washed down the drain?  :-\

Recycle?

p.s.  i smell like degreaser... so, i'm thinking my answer is absorption.   :(

I take waste oil to our Highway Dept they use it for heat. The only degreasers i use are simple Green and GUNK. That get washed into the driveway.

We have a local household hazardous waste drop-off center. I dispose of old brake fluid, antifreeze, carb cleaner, etc. this way.

The local auto parts store takes in old oil.

lots of places around that take used oil.

carb cleaner - the dip can still works. when it's done, household toxic waste day at the dump. carb spray gets used over the solvent tank....

degreaser - paint thinner a.k.a. mineral spirits(with carb spray)... lasts for years in the parts washer, and when done.... up the road to the shop that has a solvent recycler..... pour in 5gal. of yuck.... get back clean solvent and a little black brick in a bag.

I keep it a 50 gallon drum and drop it off at the dump, where they dispose of it for me.
people sell drums for 5 bucks around here.
don't know where they get em...
everything I say is pure speculation and
I have no idea what I'm talking about  ._.

degreaser down the driveway sounds fine... until you think about all the stuff that is now with the degreaser due to the "degreasing".   :-\  more like degreasing one thing and greasing another.

how many of us are just mixing chemicals in a storage device and take it to the local dump/hazardous chemical collection site?

I have 2 55gallon plastic drums ($4 each) I put my used oil in. I take them to a local garage when full.

The degreased stuff I dump into  smaller containers and wait a year for the hazardous waste day at the local recycling dump. Never just dump in the driveway as I have a pond at the end which is used for the local fishing durby.

My friend, Marcus (prosolar here on the boards), is a mechanic. He just takes them to work with him, where they dispose of them properly. Works out nicely.
