thinking about lowering my windjammer
« on: March 25, 2009, 05:30:58 PM »
I was playing around in Photoshop this evening with an idea for lowering the Windjammer Fairing on my K6.  Last year I  emailed Craig Vetter with my thoughts and he was helpful, even telling me he would make up an ABS patch kit for the ends of the fairing where it needs to be cut.

Here's the bike as it sits now:

Here's what I'm thinking:

* Cut and re-weld current bracket
* Superbike bars
* Shortened cables (if necessary)

Does anyone know how well the ABS plastic fairing would handle paint?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Craig knows all...   it was in his FAQ  http://www.craigvetter.com/pages/Vetter_Fairings/Frequently%20asked%20questions.html

What kind of paint should I use?
 "The original factory paint was catalyzed urethane paint. It is very common today because of the plastic bumpers on cars. Check with your local auto paint people. "

I also found this bit:   "I was asked about fixing a crotch-rocket fairing. If it is made of ABS - and as far as I know, all fairings are made of ABS - our Hotcha Repair Kit will allow you to fix it better, cheaper and stronger than "plastic welding", which I don't think is very strong. "

So it would seem that any paint that's ok for sportbike fairings (made of ABS) would do for an ABS Vetter fairing.  I wonder if the rattle can paints specialized for plastics will do the trick?

Ben, ABS paints just fine.  When I sanded my side covers all the way down, there was no primer underneath the base coat.  (Of course there is now)
