" A tale of two Super Sports"
« on: April 09, 2009, 06:17:28 AM »
I need some advice with my CB's. I want to build myself a super sport cafe. 3 yrs ago I caught the cafe bug and wanted to pick up a project bike. I never worked on motos before but I'm somewhat handy. I bought a 77' SS for $500. It was not running but it was in descent shape the motor wasn't locked up so i grabbed it. In 07' I found another 77' for parts on craig's list for $300. When I get it home I realize that bike #2 was more intact than bike #1. So I figured I'd use #2 as my runner and #1 as parts.  Yesterday I finally got a chance to work on #2. Fresh battery, clean carbs, fresh gas and filter. I got it running....sounded a little erratic..then I heard some tapping coming from the valve cover. So I'm thinking it's been sitting around for a few years now let me drain/change the oil out of it. When I drained it maybe only 2 qts came out of it. This oil was very thick and very grey in color.

Should I keep working on this motor or should I move back to Bike#1 whose oil is pretty clean....What should I do
 Thanks.

put some more oil in with a new filter as well - then run it some more - it's probably only condensation/moisture build up from sitting for a while..

+1 on the fresh oil and filter.. should only set you back 15 bucks for now.  But before starting it up again, I would remove the tappets and check and adjust the valves, just to make sure the valvetrain is working ok.  Keep us updated!

Just sounds like condensation from sitting for so long. After you change the oil and filter check it again for color.
