More woe on the Jaffacycle, the starter motor wouldn't engage, starter spins well enough but will not fire into the motor.
So I crash started the 400 and we had a good ride anyway, maybe the battery isn't charging up enough to throw the starter clutch at the main engine.
After the ride the starter worked great again, it's like something is not getting meshed when the starter button is pressed.

We seem to have cured the starter issues, one thing that was easy to spot when the side cover came off the engine was the alternator bolt had worked it's way off and was not doing it's job, my fault for not tourquing it up hard enough.
Am working on a set of crash bars for Jaffa, she had a wee oops in the car park where she works and became pinned under the bike for a few scary moments.
I bought some crashbars off Trade-me weeks ago but they turned out to be CB650 honda one's ha ha of all the luck.
Anyhow I've decided to fit them anyway with a little bit of modification and some new brackets they should give her some wriggle room should she can off again. :)
I'm still sure I need to lower the bike some more and am looking for some shorter rear shocks, I figure if she can reach the ground well enough she may not tip off as easily. ;D

Though we had another issue with the Jaffacycle as when I opened the garage door up today there was a pool of gas under her bike.
But thinking on it I realised that I had left the bike on it's side stand (normally we centre stand our bikes) and with that wierd vacuum gas tap her bike has we leave it on prime.
Theory being that as the bike was tipped to the left all night, gas leaked past the bowl seal and as the float level dropped the gas tap being on prime allowed more gas to replenish the bowl etc etc....
Lesson learned....main stand the bike at night. :)

OK got the crashbars on and they are solid as but found a problem when her ladyship was heading for work this morning, the distance between the front guard and the crashbars lessens upon applying the brakes!
Didn't notice it as I didn't have a riders' weight on bike last night when I fitted the bars.
Jaffa rode off to work anyway and as long as she doesn't do power stops in mid corner maneuver she will be fine.
I'll raise the bars tomorrow when I can get my hands back on the bike.
Check out how narrow the bike is, the crashbars look like ears!

OK I fixed the crashbars, took me 3 hours and I drilled every hole 6 times cos I kept getting the measurments wrong! >:(
Anyhow she was coming home tonight and it just died, no lights nil, I checked and sure enough the main fuse was blown but when I tried to fix that it heated up like crazy.
I'm guessing something hot is running to earth, probably through the casing as they do.
We will trailer the bike home tomorrow and see what's what. :(

God damn it she's fried the wiring up to the ignition switch, todays mission (I have 1 spare hour before work) is to unwind the tape on the main loom and find out how bad the damage is.

Err this might explain the charging problem she was experiencing, still tracking back the short that it effecting the ignition system.

I've narrowed it down to the orange secondary power wires, the reds from the battery are fine but the orange is showing an earth somewhere plus all those horrible melted and corroded regulator wires, how did I not notice those before? >:(

Yikes I just stripped the main loom from the bike, at least I will be able to fix some of the PO's horrific wiring jobs, guess a reliable electrics system is worth the effort and I won't get those "come and get me the bike has stopped" calls. ;D
I have no idea how the battery ever got any recharge from the system he had running, all neatly hidden inside a rubber tube thing, who knew it was all green and horrible in there?

Have spent Xmas eve replacing connectors on the Jaffacycle, everywhere from the ignition system back to the regulator and alternator wires!!! >:(
Finally got it all back together and what do you know....first push of the button and she fires straight up, hardly needed any choke and I used a 6amp fuse instead of the stock 15amp just to see if the fault was still present.
If she can run with 6amp fuse I'm guessing I got most of the repairs spot on. ;D

AAARGH spoke too soon as per usual, this morning a big puddle of oil/gas mix on floor of shed under Jaffas bike.
Drained the sump and sure enough all the gas from tank had migrated South again!!! >:(
$37 worth of new oil and it wouldn't start? turned almost everything but not the crankshaft?
Loose bolt on end of flywheel again duh!......locktited that bastid this time. ;D
Since we got the bike the Americanised gas tap has had us buffaloed, bike won't run on any setting but PRIME so we have been riding with that, today I decided I better get to the bottom of this gas tap bizzo as I wasn't going to spend any more $$$ on oil and gas mixture. ;)
After dissasembling the gas tap I figured out (finally) that it should be connected to the carbs to give it vacuum for the diaphram.....simple really...what was I thinking??
Anyhow added a new length of tube from carb to gas tap and what do ya know it fires up without the choke! Just imagine trying to sync those carbs with one having a tube that was supposed to be attached to the gas tap but was just sucking air!.....OK we off to test run it now...... :D ;D ;) :)

Andy750 got me a translation and it means "warning speed light" so we can just ignore it.
Jaffa says she can get over 90kmph out of the bike so maybe I need to chase her a bit harder onto the motorway. ;D
Still impressed that we don't even need the choke from cold now that the diaphram is connected correctly. :) and the bike idles really smooth.

Did you mention Farmall tractors? My partner's brother has a couple in a shed, they were off the family farm so he knew them well, I think he's gonna donate them to a tractor museum, there is quite a Farmall Tractor collectors group here in NZ.

Ya I did.
I have the one dad bought about 20 years ago.  I plow snow with it.  The Super C had about 25 horses new, but might be 10 or 15 now with all the blow by.  I don't think it has ever been cracked since new in 50 or 51.  When I do rebuild it I will need to put in mains, rods, sleeves and pistons.  But that's one of the long time away projects.  I also need to collect the implements for it for the "Just to have" factor.  I'll have to see if I can find a pic or two of the old girl.

Jaffa used to drive their farm Farmall, the potato paddocks were in peat so the roads were extra bumpy, she reckons the old Farmall would do massive wheelstands as you went along. ;D

#$%* #$%* #$%* #$%* #$%*!!!!!!! >:( we went for a really cool ride today, did some country roads with plenty of hills and twisties, stopped at a wharf side cafe for lunch then toured the seaside roads, we were just about to head home when Jaffa in the lead took off up the highway at full speed.
Hey I'm up for some of that so we shot along then suddenly she's pulling over and the bike is dead, very dead!
I headed home and got a car and trailer, got it home and not happy, noises coming from the motor are grinding crunchy sounds!!
No GSX 400/450/500 motors for sale in NZ that I can find either. :(
Guess I'll have to pull the motor strip it and see what's broken, my mechanics intuition is saying the big end bearings are shot.....we'll see.

Ouch.
Maybe the oil pump went south I mean north on her while opened up.  I hope it's something simple to fix and not a "Need new engine" break.

It sounds grindy/clunky when I turn it over so I'm thinking main bearings. :(
