NGK BP7ES?
« on: October 23, 2005, 05:54:11 PM »
I read here on the forum that the NGK BP7ES is more for racer bikes. Mine look like they are running rich with the black sooty carbon on them. If I install the NGK BP5ES will this help it run a little leaner? I'm getting conflicting answers in my searches. I plan on doing a tune-up and carb rebuild this winter. This is on a 1975 CB550F SS. Thanks!

If your carbs are tuned properly then the stock plugs are best. Tune your carbs, not your plugs, and start with stock everything.

Do not run "BP" plugs on these bikes, they are a projected tip design of spark plug intended for a different application. Check your owners or service manual for the correct plug for your model, I "THINK" it is B7ES. B5 is significantly hotter, I wouldn't use it.
A hotter plug will not make a mixture leaner, only the proper repair or adjustment will do that. Changing the spark plug type cannot change a mixture.
Don't look for short cuts, you will only create other problems for yourself later. Learn to diagnose and correctly repair your bike. There are many people here willing to help you.

D plugs, B plugs, damn ...
I must have just lost it last night, thinking of my RD or something.

Thanks for correcting that error, Einyodeler
