Somali pirates
« on: April 13, 2009, 07:02:03 AM »
Anyone feel sorry for these guys? This whole pirate thing makes me sick, supposedly there are 13 ships with 228 foreign nationals out there under the control of Somali pirates demanding ransom for their release. Some loser at the International Maritime Board warned that the Killing of the pirates holding the American could lead to retaliation by future pirates!! THEY ARE FREEKING PIRATES! They have already crossed that line and no amount of decency on our part is going to help. Makes you think that they see these guys as part of a Disney movie or something.

p.s. I'm sure that if you gotta get killed that at least the US cares to send the very best! ;)

Do I feel sorry for the Pirates?? nope...but who would???

I do feel sorry for those being held in wake of the killing simply because it may result in retaliation. Having said that I don't see how they had any other choice and unfortunately you can't negotiate with the hostage takers as that would open up a huge can of worms and future hostage takings. They need to know that there is little chance of reward and very high risk involved.

Here's a view from Canuckistan.Apparently, these bandits operate from a "country" that has not had a functioning govt. for many years. It might not be a bad idea for the democracy's of the world to act in unison to try and help that issue. That should help put the popularity of piracy back in the bottle .In the mean time,in true Dirk Pitt fashion, eliminate them.

These pirates gun down innocent civilians all the time it just doesn't make a fantastic news  story. That's kinda why peaceful pepole resort to violence in the first place....we retaliated this time.

When laws are broken, and they are the act of piracy, and these actions happens in international waters outside of a nation's coastal boundaries, then an international court can order anything as a response. But it must come from an international court. Then the US, France, or Brittan can response with military action in international waters before anyone else is harmed. I think the bottom of the sea should be the final resting place for these pirates and their ships...

Didn't we try that before? IIRC, they welcomed us by killing the troops and dragging the bodies through the streets with the cameras rolling.

F--- that.

Let's just troll the 'Mighty Mo' up and down the coast lobbing shells in until we've used up all that surplus ordnance that we've been storing since WW2, Korea, VN .

At the end of the Vietnam war refugees were called "Boat People" They were being preyed upon and killed by pirates. The International community patrolled the water and recused the people and chased the pirates. Italy sent some ships, they had a slightly different twist. They rescued the people and when they saw Pirate trying to operate, they san k them. When asked why they sank the Pirates, the Italians replied "we only have to chase them once!."

Though I am definitely NOT in favor of terroristic acts, you
should read the whole story of Somalia. The more I learn, the more
I agree with the pirates.

Whenever you use deadly force (point a gun at someone) for purposes illegal personal gain, you have to expect you could die.

I agree that the pirates deserve what ever comes their way and don't sympathize with any one that embraces evil.

I do feel for Somalians, we have a large Somali refugee resettlement community here in Portland Maine.  The US, and other western governments have put the country through hell with half-witted, and poorly executed regime change exercises. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Covert_U.S._regime_change_actions#Somalia_2006-2007)

Instability, extreme poverty, and the absence of the rule of law from any direction there has led to the real chaos we see.

There's not many things that justify involving an Innocent (for lack of a better term) third party.

The previously involved party's negotiating and paying these people off are what got us where we are

Is there oil in Darfur?

First time a US merchant ship was pirated in 200 some years- I say that's a pretty good run.

Maybe it would be novel if we called these guys Privateers.  That's just another word for enterpreneur.  This country has been messed over by the west horribly and there aren't many different lines of work.  You could be a pirate, blackmailer, mercenary or a few other things or there's always the noble pasttime of starving.
Yes, western troops did go there once to be peacekeepers but their stupid commanding officer never had the sense to maintain neutrality.  He decided who the good guys were and who the bad guys were and picked sides and lost all credability for the west and turned the populace against our efforts.  He was an American, by the way.  The Canadians handled it differently.  Their commanding officer made like John Wayne and some soldiers beat a Somali kid to death.  We had reviews up here that went on for a long time and all the higher-ups got was a slap on the wrist.  One enlisted man tried to commit suicide and has been brain dead for years and another was the fall guy who went to jail.
I'm not for pirates, not in the slightest, I thought that in this context shooting them was the thing to do but I think it's important to know something about the area and our history there.  There are reasons for things.  We ought to start from that fact.  If not then we just say stupid things like 'they hate us because we are free'.  That's unforgiveable bull#$%*.l

They are Somali and mostly Muslim. They circumcise their women (remove the clitoris), which is the seat of their sexual pleasure, by cutting it out with a knife, without anesthetic. Then stone them to death if they get out of line.

"Out of line?" I'll define that if you want me to, later.

But it's sort of along the lines of being seen out and about with a man who isn't her husband, brother, son, father, uncle or other male family member. Or by being out of line by being pack-raped, so then being stoned to death for the unholy crime of Infidelity to whoever or whatever and bringing shame to the (male) family members. Or killed by other family members for bringing dishoner to their family after the fact of being pack raped. And on and on it goes.

The civilized world seems to be crippled by the International Attention of this piracy. Scared to actually ACT and to then be seen as Ugly Murderers of Poor black People.

My suggestion is: Call in Blackwater, (don't mention Blackwater, FFS), 10 men to a ship. Use radar and Night Vision Goggles. Then get the Barrett's out (50 cal sniper rifles) and deal with these idiots. Better still, a mini-gun. Harsh?, hell no, it's innocent crew versus pirates.

The victims are mostly the crews, also from third world countries and who are working for pathetic wages.

The international community has been paralyzed by these skinnies in fizz-boats for too long. It's just more political correctness gone wrong, as usual.

Who will stand up to these pirates?

A LOT of this could be alleviated by simply allowing the crew to possess and be trained to use the same armament the pirates seem to have at their disposal...of course, this would never fly with most governments...letting civilians have equal arms for defending themselves...

There are few cases where shooting first and asking questions later is acceptable, but this is definitely one of those few cases, in my humble hillbilly opinion. Large groups of people coming down with the "Geneva syndrome" isn't going to help anyone but the pirates (who aren't only somalians, btw...lawless degenerates from several nations are there taking advantage of the "opportunity"), close your eyes for a second and these bastards will KILL YOU. Yeah, they're pissed off now, but there's how many of them vs. the rest of the world? How many countries are going to come to their aid if something effective is done? Not many I'd wager...

During WWII and before the ships traveled in convoys with a warship or two around. The nations involved can pony up a few gunboats to help convoy the ships. We do not want the Americans to have to get out of their true good nature. Ugly things are done when that happens.

Hey there, in this free market, why should the government do this kind of work - why isn't Maersk et al commissioning Black Water or some other privateers to protect them from the privateers?

Why should we pay taxes for what should rightly be passed on to us as a cost of doing business?
