cam chain
« on: October 25, 2005, 04:19:36 PM »
I took a stab at resetting the cam chain tension, my question is this.
My book says to set the #1 to 15 deg past TDC, doing so should make slack on the rocker arm.  so I set it to 15 deg PTDC and got only the slightest bit of slack on the rocker. How much movement should I get from that rocker?
next question is when I slacked off the lock nut and turned the adjuster screw in but it hardly moved in I didn't force any thing however there was a fair amount of resistance on the adjuster. What can You tell me about this.
I farted and made my son cry.

That sounds right you should only be able to jiggle it a bit.  Was the cam chain getting noisey or did you just feel like messin with it?  Reason I ask, it may have had good tension already and you may have heard clutch rattle if you did indeed hear something rattling.  A carb sync could help that.  If your sure it was the cam chain making noise, the tensioners are known for getting stuck, and that could be why there was little adjustment.  Do a search on it, Ive seen plenty of dialogue about that particular problem and how to solve it.  No biggy.  May as well check your valve clearances after you get the chain sorted out.  Should be close to the part in your manual covering cam chain adjustment.  Good practice to do the valves after the chain.

And before the carb syncing.
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

Thanks fellers, what I am hearing is actually two noises, a slight rattle noise as well as a whirr sound.
I might have confused the clutch rattle for cam chain noise.

G'Day Mate, ok, when you turn your engine over and you get #1 at 15 deg past TDC and you can't detect hardly any movement in the rocker, turn the crank another 360 deg and try again, you'll probably find it makes a difference. From memory, the #1 inlet (that's the outside cylinder on the gear pedal side) should have .002 (2 thousandths of an inch) clearance, and you can "feel" the movement.

When you're sure you've got it, undo the lock nut on the cam chain tensioner, then undo the bolt a couple of turns. The adjuster shaft is wedge shaped, so you have to undo the bolt so the shaft can slide forward under spring pressure. Sometimes they get stuck, so give the adjuster body a "rap" with small hammer, screwdriver handle etc.

If there was any slack in the chain, you may well hear it go "clunk" and you may even see some movement at the rocker as the retensioned chain slightly pulls the cam backwards, but don't be worried if you don't. Wind the bolt back in until it seats, then tighten up the locknut, and you're done. Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"
