If you did that to the seal removing it, I hope you didnt score the shaft.. :o

 If you did, you have a new problem.. it involves lots of seal replacement, or pulling the motor..

It's hard to tell from that picture, but is that even an oil seal?  It looks like it could be black silicone gasket maker that the PO used instead of an oil seal.  It's just an hypothesis, though.  I'm not sure how well that would even work, if at all.

That thin rubbery stuff just fell out of the tach-engine mount hole when I removed the cable...I am fairly sure it was once a seal of some sort? I then picked out some very small rubber bits with a bobby pin. I am sure I did not score anything...that stuff was sort of like jelly

I agree with Gordon. Sounds and looks like someone got pissed at the leaking tach seal and put silicone or some kind of sealant in there.  I have never seen a old tach seal come out like jelly. Unless it is some really bad aftermarket one. One side of that OEM seal is pretty stiff.

The actual oil seal is rubber surrounding a stiff metal washer-like piece, and won't just fall out on its own.  It has to be pulled out either with a pick or by using a wood screw to bite into it to pull on.  Are you sure the silicone stuff wasn't just put in after the fact and that the original oil seal isn't still in there?

Took my "barn find" F1 out Saturday for its first ride since 1993.  Went pretty well, stumbles a little when I rolled the throttle, but not bad.  I only had an oil leak from the tach drive seal.  Couldn't see any other leaks, so I was happy.  Wanted to check for leaks before winter so I could fix any problems during the down time.

I stopped at the local Honda dealer today, they didn't have either the DOHC or the SOHC seal on hand.  Ordered the DOHC seal for $5.00 + tax and need to wait two days for it to come in.

I've met that guy, he works a lot of places. Tried to pull the engine in my truck for a bad oil gauge sending unit. He didn't know I saw the pressure on the  oil test gauge between the cowl and hood. Shame on him. At another shop he tried to charge my friends wife 500 for a warranty muffler. ::)
