Carb Help

Hello All,
I am a newbie to bikes. Just got a 1979 cb750k. 14k miles. Bike ran OK for the first couple of days and then I noticed overflow from carbs and rough idle. I decided to pull carbs and have a look. Now Ive owned aircooled VWs for 10 years so I have a little experience with carbs. I weighed all the floats and all were between 7.2 and 7.6 except one that was 9.2grams. Replaced offending float. Also replaced float needles. I messed up by removing long brass needle that is forward of bowl (air fuel mix needle?) Now Ive got gas coming out of overflow continuously and rough running backfiring etc. Need to know where to start with a/f needle and overflow prob. Ive done a search but not much comes up for these carbs. If anyone can help or point me to manuals etc would be great.
TIA
Tristan
