Question about CL100's
« on: April 26, 2009, 12:16:50 PM »
A buddy at work was thoughtful enough to tell me about his neighbor who is getting rid of a 72 CL100 that is supposed to be in good condition, and the price is too good to pass up it's....(drumroll) FREE! I did a google search and couldn't find much on this model other than the basic stock info, and parts listings. eBay seems to have a fair amount of parts for cheaper than my CB's parts (finally, a motorcycle I can "afford"). I am a pretty big guy, 6'1" and an eighth of a ton (more fun than saying 250lbs eh  ;D ) can I expect this thing to move my ample girth? I don't expect it to race, just putt around town on the back roads an teach new riders how to ride. What can anyone tell me, and is there a forum for these babies?

Thanks,

Brandon
Sure it's for sale! How much you ask?? Well, how much are you willing to pay??? Now triple it, that's the price!

It'll get ya around. Won't be fast, but will be better than a moped.
I don't have a cb100 manual handy, otherwise I'd point you at it.
No.

But mopeds are so GQ  ;)

When I was doing my motorcycle safety I was riding a 125cc Honda (wow, I'm seeing a theme) had to give it a fair amount of throttle but it moved decent. I'd never take it on the freeway, but for the surface streets I felt it would have been adequate. Besides, it's a change from the SOHC/4's that I have and a new learning experience. Sure hope I get it, course then I gotta figure out where to store it and how to explain it to the missus  ;D

Haha, I'll have to try that.

I was thinking "Wow, check out what followed me home, can I keep it? I promise I'll take real good care of it!"

In all fairness to the missus, it's not her I have to convince, it's my mom. I live in an apartment, so it would stay at moms, when I'm not riding it. Dang, gotta get a house with a garage!

Maybe she won't notice. "Naw Mom, that's my old cb100. I've had it right there for 14 years. Maybe you just got so used to seeing it, you forgot it was there?"
No.

Haha, or just say "I told you about it the other day and you were cool with it, what changed??" she is getting on in years . ;)  Heh, might try that one just to see if I could get away with it, and if she catches me just give her an innocent look and say it was a senility test  ;D

Outstanding little machines!!

The 100/125cc Honda engines will run forever and ever, as long as you keep plenty of good clean oil in 'em.  The cam rides right in the aluminum of the head, and if they starve the top end for oil, you're lookin' for a new head.  They had no oil filtration at all, other than a centrifugal 'slinger', and about all THAT does is separate the heavier chunks...   ;D

Otherwise, it'll fer sure haul you around at 45mph or so.

My family has owned 4 or 5 of 'em over the years, and my older brother and I used to go boonie-bashing together on a '75 XL100.  Identical motor, just different 'styling'.  XL's are dual-sports, and CL are the high-piped 'street scrambler' styling.

And, if you really want to breathe on it, there's a whole world of hot-rod parts, thanks to the AHRMA 100cc class - bore kits, stroker kits, cams, valve springs, and they respond really well to even mild port clean-up.

As for forums, there's ThumperTalk at http://www.thumpertalk.com/forum/     They have a Honda section, and a Vintage section that has PLENTY of enthusiasts.

There's also an XL Forum page at  http://forum1.aimoo.com/XLBoard    Lots of good advice there, too, but kinda slow, posting-wise.

Have a ball!  And, of course, post some pix of your new little guy!

I had an SL100 from 1971 to 1980?, bored it out to 125 then to 150cc, race cam. Pretty tame stock, but responded well to upgrades. It loved to rev and would take a beating. It hauled my then skinny arse through the northern Michigan woods without fail.
A CL100 (10hp?) would be ok for putt-putting on level ground but I think you would be losing speed on any kind of a grade - so maybe change sprockets.
I think the CL is the rarer of the models if you need body parts but the engine parts should be similar.
Its a great learner/beginner bike. The controls are the same as bigger bikes, but without the weight and horsepower.

:(  Well, guess it wasn't meant to be. The neighbor had already given it to someone else. Oh well, it was really cool that my buddy took the time to go over there an check, and that he even thought to offer it to me. On the bright side, there will be others, and who knows, by then I might even have a workshop to work on them in!
