Question about CB750 final drive bearing retainer
« on: April 28, 2009, 01:08:26 PM »
Hi guys!
I working on a K0 and have a question about the bearing retainer on the final drive. On one I have the bearing retainer sits above the flange a small amount and on the other it's flush. It's flush on my k1's too. Is the one on the left in the picture below a very early final drive flange? Or is the bearing retainer supposed to be flush on all flanges? The studs are shorter too.
Thanks,
Cliff.

Thanks Johnie! I don't have the removal tool to be sure the retainer is tight and check if it's the right bearing in there. I better get one or make one and get it off there.

I think it may have backed off, or bearing is not seated.

Take it to a tool styore, buy 2 close fitting drill bits, put smooth end in reatainer. Then turn it carefully and clamp in a vise.. makes sure drills stay in..
Now turn the retainer like a steering wheel, or use a piece of 1x4 betwwen the drive lugs..

 G'day mate.
The retainers has got to be flush. Otherwise it it it will screw out and grind away and will need to be replaced. A good inexpensive tool to use is a ajustable angle grinder key that you take the grinding wheels off or on. Works a treat to screw them in and out. Hope this helps ;D

Thanks guys. A friend made a tool to take the retainer out so I have removed the proud one and another that was flush. Both retainers are about the same thickness, the proud one about a hair thicker. The depth of the holes are about the same too. Same bearing installed. The only thing we didn't do is try to tighten the proud retainer.  :-[ :-[  I'll try that today. The way the holes are chewed up I think some po did not have the right tool for the job.

Ok, now I'm really embarrased! We tightened the retainer down and it did go flush. Should have done this first but oh well.......I will be 60 soon. Now to pull the bearing.

Always good to get those old bearings out Cliffy.  I changed the front and back out on the KO & K1.  Now I know where she stands.  Plus, the quality of the sealed bearings compared to what was used back then is much better.

Magpie, check this video at 4:00 for a nice K0 rear wheel bearing retainer view, direct from the Honda Collection hall.

I've just found this "Twist the Throttle" show DiscoveryHD, Monday night at 10pm, Kawasaki story this week, BMW last week, Suzi 5/4, MV 5/11:

Thanks guys! I just checked with my local Honda shop and the retainer is still available for under $17. The hamfisted po of this bike made a mess of the one I have so time for a new one. I'm in so far now...................
