I ruined many screws until I saw a post here that recommended a #3 phillips. Its a perfect fit. Get one.

The issue with the Phillips head screws on these bikes is that they aren't Phillips!  They look a lot like Phillips, but they are actually Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS).  You may have noticed the small dot on the screw head?  That's how you know the screw is JIS.

You can get a JIS driver set, kinda rare, or, as time and $$ allow, change your JIS screws to stainless steel hex cap screws.  Search this site for suppliers.
good to know
thanks

my only number 3 phillips is on my impact driver... it gets a lot of use.   ;)

i would recommend, on top of all the others, a very large toolbox complimented w/ an over abundance of stickers!   ;D

Hi cudjo,

While I agree with all of the prior recommendations, I would say that the first best thing you can do would be to buy a Honda tool kit that fits in the space provided for it under your seat by Honda.  It has a decent assortment of wrenches, screwdrivers, spark plug installer/remover, pliers, adjuster for rear shocks, etc.

They are still available as brand new kits from the Honda OEM suppliers on the web.  Just a ball park figure, but I think the entire kit is about $65.......... The nice thing is you will have these tools with you out on the road if anything happens....... and happenings do occur.  You will curse yourself the first time you break down and don't have that tool kit under your seat. ;) ;)  For the amount of money, it is the best all around buy you can make......... It is the only one that will be with you on the road.

Though I have many tools...... impact wrenches, torque wrenches, snap ring pliers, digital height gages with dial indicators,....... on and on, I have many times done routine maintenance with just this under the seat tool kit.

the flat tube fits over the handle large wrench to give you more leverage.

If your broke you can go to big lots and get some starter stuff listed above, but they will be crappy tools, until you come across some sales. Hardware stores, Walmart and the internet are places to look for sales. But these places also have crappy as well as good tools. With tools you really get what you pay for. Are you tearing it down and rebuilding it? If you are you will need more tools than if your just maintaining it.

oh, what I would do for a big lots.

There are a couple on eBay right now. The top one has less than an hour to go if you care to go that route.

Say cudjo,

I reread your initial post.  Sounds like your bike has not arrived yet?  If so, perhaps your bike still has the original tool kit with it?

Keep your fingers crossed and let us know if it's there after the bike arrives....... Keep in touch!

+1 on the impact driver

I defiantly agree on getting the sears tool set.  If you can wait until they have one of their BIG saturday sales and go in nice and early.  I forget which set I got, but it was 250+ pieces and 60% off, huge savings.  And sears is really good about returning broken tools too.  I had a 3/8 ratchet replaced 3 times in one day by the same salesperson at sears. In hind sight it would have been cheaper to buy a bigger ratchet than drive back and forth 3 times.

Hey cudjo,

What you need is harbor freight.  Impact driver $5.  http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=93481

So far it's taken all my screws out without a problemo.  Yes people will say they have cheap tools. But for just starting out and limited use, they are ok.  They have sales constantly and if you pm me I'll let you know how you can get 20% off coupons for items.

Unfortunately for you the closest stores are not that close.  Check out this link for locations...http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/retail_stores.taf#NJ.  Maybe you can tie it in to a trip to a mall for the significant other???

Good luck!

Because I love tools, my tool buying philosophy is...

Don't buy it till you need it (your bank account will thank you)  And when you do buy it, don't skimp.  Tools are one of the few things anymore where the price actually reflects the quality (to a certain extent.)  Good, high quality tools should last longer that you do (especially hand tools.)  Used tools can be just as good as new ones also.

Harbor Freight is good for consumables (sandpaper, tape, etc.) or one time use tools, but aside from that, I wouldn't shop there.  Obviously you don't need to go out and drop 20k on a full Snap-on setup, but you should expect to spend some money.  I've got a 155 piece mechanics tool set from Sears that has been supplemented as needed.

I got a nice set of 6 point Craftsman wrenches for xmas, I picked up the JIS screwdrivers from McMaster-Carr (makes all the difference in the world), feeler gauges, nice multimeter, Craftsman strobe timing light (found in a Goodwill for 5 bucks, works great), sync gauges, impact driver, torque wrench, etc.

Also, think about how often you see yourself using the tools before you splurge and buy nice ones.  And if you are only going to use them once, see if there is someone who will let you borrow it for a case of beer.

I believe the term " limited use" applies to Harbor Freight. If you are just a home hobbyist and have only one bike or two to work on.... HF is fine.

But at one point I had 13 techs working for me at the Kawi dealer and they all used HF for tools. We had to hire a kid part time to make tool runs almost 3 times a day. Finally I said buy quality or I'll start charging for time lost.

In a professional setting... NO they won't last.

But in your home... What can it hurt? They are cheap.

for 5-25 dollar air nailers you can't beat it... i have yet to wear any of them out.
i've got a nice chop/miter saw that works very well.  on my second blade and that thing is strong.  bright orange chicago tools brand
i also got a good sized air compressor somewhat recently and its going strong.
my opinion is if you're worried about it, get the coverage plan... its still probably 1/3 of the price of snap-on and those guys.

sometimes i think the hand tools are worse than the power tools... i got that multi colored t-handle allen set and the plastic handles strip on the allens... I've had it for 10 years now though and still use them, gingerly.

the rubber gloves are cheap and AWESOME... actually good gloves

i will not argue that harbor freight sells better tools... if i had a lot more money i would buy mac or snap-on.  just because the truck is fun.   ;D  i used to get myself in trouble on that damned thing!

I think I have around 50k in tools between matco and snap-on.

There's a few mac thrown in for good measure somewhere also.

And then there's the machinery.... and boxes....

Wow.... I have spent way too much money. lol.

I have a collection of Northern Tool & Equipment tools.  But for important stuff, I goto my parent's place and use my dad's Snap-On tools (and his brain when I need help).
