Jerry, I'm going to take a break. Since the Honda CB750/836 K4 build, I've done some other fun and challenging restorations.
You remember the 1967 CB450 Black Bomber "trash to treasure" - definitely my most ambitious project to date.
You remember the KZ900, from a $3,500 eBay bike to one I put in the Barbers VJMC show back in October.
Then I'm almost done with the 1974 GT750 Suzuki a 3 cylinder, 2 stroke. It's going to be a beauty.
What I'm going to do now is some touring and I want to resume my piano and weight training. I was into weight lifting for many years and I miss that disipline. I've never done a long trip, I'm 51 and this year we have one planned that's over 7,000 miles and loops the Grand Canyon and a possible 2nd one to upstate New York, Toronto, and on up to Montreal. These are untested waters for me, but I've recently armed myself for the task -
When I turned 40 several years back, I started thinking about the things I wanted from life and which of those were "not achieved". By the time I was 41, my wife found me a piano and I started lessons which I stuck with for 3 years. I was certified for open-water diving by the time I was 45 and I've made 200 dives since then. The dream of learning to fly went away when a long-time family friend who'd been a charter pilot in his own small planes for 30 years died as his plane and passenger flew into tree tops in North Georgia mountains during a thunderstorm. I figure if he couldn't do it, I sure couldn't and I gave that dream up. Now, I'm 51 and the dream of getting on the open road with dear friends is one of those unrealized.
This GT will be my last bike. I've sort of satisfied my childhood dream of restoring old bikes. Restoring and collecting is actually something I've wanted to do for many years. I enjoy the build more than the product or the ride. Heck, some of the restorations have never been started after completion. Again, it is the build that I love most. The realization that I can't keep any more has sunk-in. Just keeping batteries charged and those bikes that are serviced up and running is a pain. Pain and hassel was never intended for the mix.
Not to preach, but at my age, I seem to be losing friends and family faster than I'm making them. It's time to get out and enjoy. Have any of you watched the "Long Way Round"? Do yourself a favor and find a copy on DVD. It will stir your soul.....
Regards,
Gordon
