  • If not for my failures I'd never know my limits
So the wife and I finally decided to build a shed/shop for all of my "stuff" which includes the bikes, tools, yard implements, etc.  Since our property only has one place that would make sense and it has a significant slope the simple build turned into a real project, especially since I'm pouring a 5" slab.  So far the project has gone well over budget due to a real underestimate of the amount of gravel needed to backfill the foundation for slab prep and me not having a front-end loader (shoveled about 17 tons of gravel in one day by hand before my back gave out).  Between inspections and the weather we've had a few schedule delays as well.
Short of it is I'm just now coming to a good place to be able to share the progress.  Next weekend I've got friends coming over for a shed raising party so I should have some more pics after that.  Hopefully I'll be able to post the completed work space in the show your shop thread shortly after that (once I can build my benches, lofts, etc and get everything moved in).

Looking good. I may have missed it but what's the dimensions?

Save some money for insulation?

Doh.  It's a 12'x24' kit from Lowes with 8ft sides and 11'6" peak.  Planning on a loft at each end for an extra 100 sq ft or so of storage space and reinforced trusses to attach an engine/bike lift to.

We haven't decided about insulation just yet (have a basement to finish so it's lower priority) but I will be running electrical after the final inspection.  Timing is purely monetary, not to evade inspections ::).

Nice size! And you can always add some batting later. Mine's 14' x 24'. But high ceilings as well. Cubic feet can be as good as sq ft. I don't have a loft, but I have stuff hanging from the ceiling and lots of shelves.

Have fun!

That's a lot of good work you've got done there. Your pride in a job well done certainly shows, great job and good luck with the rest of your shop build.
Cheers!

Looks like you could land the Shuttle on that pad!  Probably has a better foundation than my 100 year old house.  Nice work.

A good friend of mine is an engineer with VDOT and he and some of his colleagues made some suggestions (like filling with stone instead of dirt) so it's better than just about anything I could have paid someone to do for me.  Took 48 tons of 21A, compacting every 8-12 inches, but it's earthquake proof now.  The house will fall before that pad comes apart.

Took 1/2 day on Friday to start prep and worked till late, was up around 5:30 and working by 6:15 Saturday morning. Couple of friends came over around 10am, one left by noon (scheduling conflict that his wife won) and my dad showed up around 1:30. We worked all day and into the night. Around 8pm a thunderstorm started sounding off in the distance while we were on the roof trying to get the shingles on before the ran hit. Friend holding a flashlight, me feeding shingles, my dad putting the rows down. We ran out of shingles about 15 sqft from the end and called it a night just after 9pm. Nothing like working long hard hours with friends to clear your head of all other worries. Slept like a baby last night, took everyone to breakfast and sent them on with many thanks, then got back to work. Here's the results...

Night before assembly after building the rafters and finishing treating the wood.

After the first day of work...

2nd day's progress...

Tons of work but well worth it. Got a bunch of trim work to do, finish the roof, build the lofts and workbench, finish anchoring the frame, then move everything in. Anyone bored next weekend?

Yep.  As soon as I get it finished and all the toys moved in.

OK so now we know where to house the bikes as we pass through Charlottesville. ;D
Nice play room mate, jealous don't come close. ;D
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

Absolutely.  I mentioned to the wife that I have to keep some "free space" in there in case a few other bikes happen to need storage for a little while.  Just don't tell her which ones are yours and which ones I just couldn't pass up...

I just finished building my bench last night but it was too dark to take a pic so I'll try to remember when I get home today.  Measures 26" deep x 11'3" wide and 36" high.  Used a 2x10 for the front brace and 2x4s all around and as supports every 4 ft.  Top is treated 3/4 sub-floor composite.  I was walking around on it while trying to figure out the loft and felt almost like walking on my deck so I think it'll hold an engine or 2...

It's official... I now have a new shop.  The trim still needs to be painted and I've got plenty of organization to get done but it's functional and I'm damn happy.  Here's the updated pics.

Here's what the inside looked like before I got started today with moving stuff in.

And here's after about 85% of the stuff was moved in.

Complete with shelves on the rear loft for parts.
