Cleaning a wire harness??
« on: May 14, 2009, 06:31:18 PM »
Hi,
I just got a used harness in decent shape. I want to clean the dirt/grime from the outside of the harness and handle the connectors after.I found some info on the connectors. Anyone have any suggestions of ways to clean the harness?
Thanks,
Jason

for the harness it self you could probably just use some dish soap and water.

For all the connections, I usually soak them in white vinegar for a little while.  It will clean off all the corrosion and have them looking new

Mild soapy water on a soft cloth should do.  Don't soak it.  Be sure to dry it well.
Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

I agree with OldSchool_IsCool,  I'd place the harness on top of a large cloth towel and slowly clean the harness with a damp cloth, clean it soap and water to get the road dirt off.  Follow that with WD-40 and dry paper towels.

The connectors need to be cleaned too,  one pin at a time so no errors are made (lots of photos will help you be sure to put it all back correctly)

When I cleaned mine up, I popped out one pin at a time, cleaned it up with a brass brush in a Dremmel tool, then some dielectric grease on the pin. Before the pin went back in I blew its connector slot out with compressed air, then reinserted the pin.  Replacement crimp connectors are available at auto parts stores if needed.

Once reassembled, electrical troubleshooting should be pretty easy.
