I am starting a build thread, since everyone seems to enjoy them.

I purchased this 750 for $500.  It sat outside for an undetermined number of years after the original owner ran over a piece of steel cable.  He dumped the bike, and was afraid to ride it from then on.  It was eventually was traded to the old guy that I bought it from.  It did run when I purchased it, but was in rough shape.

As I have the worlds tightest budget, this may be the longest rebuild in history.  I am just chipping away at it a little at a time, as money permits.

The day after I purchased the bike, I wheeled it out of the garage to wash it.  I noticed what may or may not have been rusting through the frame below the engine, which worried me.  To get a true idea of what I was working with, I started removing things.  Several hazy hours later, the entire bikes was disassembled.  Really didn't mean to take it completely apart, but it was just so much fun.  Defiantly one of the best days I'd had in a long time.

Needless to say, my girlfriend thought I had lost my mind.  All that time looking for a bike, and I had dismantled it less than 24 hours after purchase.

So far, I have cleaned and repainted the frame and the engine. 

My next phase will be the front end.  I am rebuilding the forks with Progressive springs, and emulators from mikesxs.com; and the steering bearings will be All Balls tapered.

The second pic shows a "badge" that I created with a little tape and paint.  Kinda silly, but I really dig it.

I've been looking for an engine color combination for a bit now...bought black and alu color and was wodering what should be black and what should be alu.....

YOU sir,nailed it perfectly...!!!   love it...!!

mind if I paint my engine the same way..???

Heck no!  Paint away.  I am not a fan of chrome, but really like the softer metal colors.  This just seemed the best way to keep the engine from looking like a great black blob in teh center.

Also, what kind of paint did you use for the frame? Rattle can?

Yep.  Duplicor gloss black 500 degree engine paint.  Figured the ceramic might make for a slightly more durable finish.

Got a few things done today.  Replaced all of the wheel bearings with All Ballz bearings.  Painted the wheels DupliColor Graphite.  Primed the oil tank.  Painted the speedo hub black.  And reassembled the refinished left hand controls.  I think these turned out very well.  

Not a lot of progress, but the budget this week was for bearings (front & rear wheel, and steering head), rear brake shoes, a rear sprocket, and fork seals.  

I really liked the graphite, so I sprayed the tank, to see if maybe I wanted to paint this and the sidecovers.  Not so sure, it is much darker in person.  

Still waiting on the steering head bearings.  Haven't shipped yet...

No, I didn't feel it was really necessary, since it ran really well when I got it.  It was just soooo nasty from sitting outside that I decided to take it apart and clean everything.

I am hoping to actually ride it next summer.  After that, I may rebuild the engine.

Or get another bike to build...
