I'm getting ready to start the rebuild on my bike and one of the things I want to do is paint the engine as well as redo the seals on the top end. Does anyone know if there is a quality complete gasket kit out there with everything I will need to replace in the top end? Everything I've read seems to agree that OEM is the way to go, with all the other manufacturers having their fans and detracters. If I have to order the parts individually I'm sure I'll miss ordering something as this is the first ever tear down I'll be attempting.

Also, any suggestions on must replace parts like the engine studs or anything? I haven't had the chance to do a compression test as my tester doesn't have a 12mm adapter, but I'm gonna check the local stores and see if I can find one.

I've use oem and aftermarket. Both are ok. Check the cam chain guide for cracks.
When assembling be sure to get the adjuster in the right slot. There is a post on it here somewhere.

Thanks, I just checked DSS and found they have an engine kit. I'll have to email them and see what it includes, but I've read good things about them so I'm sure the quality is good.

I think I've seen the cam chain tensioner post you are talking about.

on my 650 I used the athena set but went with the oem head gasket, the kit has all the seals you will need. 650's have head bolts not studs

I just re did my top end on my 82 with an athena kit from parts n more for 86.00 and 5.00 freight item # 18-0202 it's the same kit for a 1980 and it came complete with quality gaskets.

+1 on the head gasket.
I'm not sure who the maker of the kit I used was, but next motor I am into, I'm either going with a OEM honda head gasket, or a cometic one(depending on bore diameter).
Not impressed much with the aftermarket head gaskets.

Dunno, find plenty of links when google searching them, but they all lead to that appartment thing, or just don't work.

Bike Bandits has one for $90, or a full engine one for I think $100, may just go with them. I have a few weeks before it will be necissary to have it, so I'll have to look around.

Do they not come standard with the gasket kits, or the oems are just better? Also, I've read that FAQ with the great head gasket caper, and he suggests Gaskacinch on the head gasket (I think) but not on the one between the cylinders and the cam area (sorry, not good with technical names yet). Does anyone know if that Indian copper stuff works ok for this?

I never add on stuff to a head gasket,there has to be trust in the gasket itself.....

I bought my headgasket via the honda dealer(told me there where 3 left in Canada,now 2 ..

) and found just out that it didn't come with the o-rings......

good thing I'm the owner of a mechanic shop with lot's of parts..

Sorry, just want to be sure I'm thinking of the same part, are you referring to the gasket that goes between the Jugs (cylinders) and the Head (hence it's called a head gasket

)

You can sell the extra gaskets on ebay also when i was doing my upper end i asked HM about using copper spray and he said i didn't need it.

and my finger is pointing to where the o-rings should go...theres one on each outer end of the cylinder bank..

and yes,that's called a head gasket.....

Thanks Martino, felt dumb asking, but wanted to be sure I knew which one you were referring to. BB wants $75 for the oem on that one

, gonna have to look and see if I can find a better deal.

I will most likely do the Athena and then the oem Headgasket, as I'd like to only have to do this once.

Just curious what was the problem with the athena head gasket mine was metal reinforced and looked fine, what is the difference between that and th OEM one?

I have no idea, just heard a lot of people say the oem one is better.

I don't plan on a complete teardown on mine, just wanted to clean and paint everything and redo the seals as it looks like she leaks a bit, and figured while I have it out of the frame may as well. I plan on doing a hopefully detailed thread on mine

If you want to do one, I would definately follow it, I love a good build thread!

If I had my way, I'd replace most of what wears out, but unfortunately, I'm getting pretty close to my budget limit, so I gotta try and save where I can. I'll inspect the pistons for blowby and the cylinders and make a decision from there. I really need to find a money tree
